F YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE
Yucaipa is, don't worry. You're not
alone. Like Cucamonga, it's way out
there. And, like much of Southern California,
it's in San Bernardino County, home of white
trash, brown trash, black trash, yellow trash,
purple trash... any kind of trash you want.
Well, Yucaipa skatepark is about as nice as
its surroundings.
It looks like it was designed by a four-year-old
with a protractor and a paintbrush. The quar-
terpipes have impossible transitions, the banks
are lumpy and curve with random precision,
and the concrete looks and feels like it was laid
quickly and without care, with only some
smooth spots. The only two cool obstacles are
the block and the large handrail, which isn't
really that large.
It's really not worth the trip to skate it,
unless you live locally and it's the only free
public skatepark out there. It's a waste of tax-
payers' money and was probably just thrown
together to shut up skateboarders. It gets a
0.5 out of 10 on the skatepark Richter scale
and should be bulldozed, because it is an
offense to the sport. There is one good thing
about it, though: it's never crowded.
Yucaipa skatepark is located in a field
near the local high school, actually a rather
nice "get-away-from-it-all" setting. To get
there, take the 10 West from San
Bernardino, and exit Yucaipa going left.
Proceed about four miles and take a left on
the street before the high school. The park
is at the end of the street on the left (it's the
only thing out there).

Where: Bell Gardens, a largely Latino
area in Central Los Angeles.
What: All concrete, six feet and under
with metal coping, pyramids, corners,
banks, hips, rails, ledges, bumps, and a
small left-hand mini-kidney bowl designed
by Frank Garciarata.
Good: Pretty much everything.
Bad: Aluminum coping grabs a little,
sandblasted surface slightly rough, full-
pads rule in effect, possible gang activity.
Chris Swanson Factor: Lives five
minutes away.
White Dude Factor: Swanson's
friend Chicken.
Overall: 5 out of 10.
Directions: From the 5 North, exit
Garfield and go left, then left on Loveland.
Skatepark is on the other side of the park.

O Clockwise from top left: If you're
pushing in a bowl, you're doing it wrong.
Spokesmodel Joey B primped for an hour
before showcasing the park in this photo.
Joey stuck this frontside bluntslide with little
help from his entourage of stylists. Pig's-eye
overview. Cops hover, making sure no one is
having fun. Chris Swanson don't give a damn
if there's a 'blader in his landing area.
