            Albuquerque Skatepark

Clockwise from top:
How many lines can you
find? Temporarily jaded by
the world of Evel Knievel
mega-publicity stunts,
Andy Mac yawns his way
through a kickflip grab
with little fanfare. Unless
you've been skating for
a long time or you live in
in Arizona, you may
have never heard of
Colby Carter. He's been
good forever. Gap to 5-0.
Overview captions suck.
Where: About five minutes from downtown Albuquerque.
What: A free, 35,000-square-foot concrete skatepark; designed
by Site Design Group, Inc (Michael McIntyre). The park con-
sists of banks, walls, hips, rails, large combi-bowl,
square/round spine bowls with pump roller, extensions,
benches, flat bar, manual pads, split level fun box, lots of steel
coping, and stainless steel edges.
Good: Free, 7 AM-10 PM, seven days a week, and lights.
Smooth concrete and nice transitions, a large, well-rounded
park for all types of skating.
Bad: No pool coping. Other than that, nothing is bad unless
you are a biker or rollerblader (not allowed).
Pads: No pads nor helmets required.
Crash-Up Derby Factor: Hard to tell, because park has
just opened.
Overall: 8 out of 10. Good use of space and very large, deep
bowls (8 1/2') are a plus. One-third the cost of Scottsdale and
Carlsbad public parks, and three times the size.
Directions: Interstate 40 East of downtown, exit
Eubanks, go north. Left at Sonic Burger. The park is on the
left-hand side.
