HE FIRST THING I SEE WHEN I WAKE UP EVERY
morning is this collection of little drawings. They're
hanging in the hallway outside my bedroom, visible
through the barely opened door. The drawings or
painting-sketches maybe?-are the stories of travels
in faraway places. A surf trip in Panama, wanderings
around Morocco, and my favorite, done on the back of
an envelope in the living room of my old apartment.
These drawings and many others like them are the products
of the place and time they were conceived-faraway cultures
and strange languages filtered through the mind of a carefree
art guy from Pennsylvania steel country.
This guy, Rick Charnoski, is not an artiste but rather a
working creator of things that explain the world around him.

His drawings are like a journal or an album of photos shot with
a strange camera that turns birds into people and a glass of
water into a work of art.
This is but one side of Mr Charnoski's self-therapy-
he also has a knack for getting normal people to say
funny things into a video camera and then assembling
those images and words into something quite extraor-
dinary. Examples of this include Punk Rock Summer
Camp (the Warped Tour documentary) and Skatopia
(a cult classic).
I could go on and on about Rick's creative output, but
if you're really interested you will find out how to get
ahold of him.
Enjoy. -Buddy Nichols
