1978 Tony Alva
aka: Mad Dog, Mr Electric, Fritz Coy
In a time when everyone was ass kissing
and slaloming on the slopes of La Costa,
TA told the world, "that shit is weak" and
rode pools religiously. The first true
superstar, he made a living, from being the
total rebel. Guess what, he's still doing it.
Invented the frontside air
Wore gangster hats and started a trend
Skates as well at 40 as he did at 14
• Could rip slalom and freestyle as well
1979 Steve Olson
aka: Bulky
In pools and parks, Bulky truly melted down all barriers between surf
and skate with laybacks, slappies, and high-speed carve grinds (even
two times, same wall!). Skated with abandon and was smoother than ice,
the true stuff that legends are made of.
Won the first Hester series in 1978
Was Hollywood before anybody
Jumped the channel at Big O, frontside,
hung it up, and still pulled it while
Duane Peters rolled in under him
