Freestyling is the ability to spit game off
the top of the nod. It's a skill some rappers
have, although most don't. Some would go as far
to say the ability to bust a rhyme at the drop of a
hat is a gift that's Supernatural
According to the New York rapper called Super-
natural, his skills might be considered unexplainable.
"You see, being able to freestyle, I can evoke spirits
that are floating around that have something to say.
When I rap," he says in all seriousness, "I'm speaking
through the voice of a totally different person." Hist
debut album, Through the Eyes Of The Embryo, is
totally off the head. Not one to labor for hours over
one rhyme, Supernatural goes into the studio, and
based on what the beats induce in him, can produce up
to four different versions of a song in one day.
The album was inspired by the tongues that speak
through him. The eyes that watch over us. Voices that
long to remind us of the seeds that need watering. Super-
natural, it seems, is led to speak
on behalf of the children, "They
are our future, without them
there is no tomorrow.
"I feel like hip hop is a medium
where we can convey a message to our
people when they need it at a crucial
time," he says. "We (speaking of his
crew, Mohammad and Chewy) were
fed up with rappers who choose to
weste time on the airwaves by
stepping up to the mic and say
ing 'suck a dick, fuck a ho, pimp,
kill, die." Supernatural's mes
sage is much deeper than that.
He warns about those who
point a finger at rap when
they really should just check
themselves. "To play a hit
record every single day is
programming," he says.
"You start to identify with
those images and the
things that you see and
start to formulate your
own pictures in your
head. Sometimes the
pictures that you for-
mulate turns out to
be ill, A lot of peo-
ple don't even real-
ize that they get
programmed by
gangsta rap, or
any other type
of violent rap
that there is
