While the scene in Indianapolis is far from a skateboard dreamland, it
deserves a helluva lot more credit that it gets. I am here to take you
through our fair city, "The Amateur Sports Capital Of The World," as it
calls itself, and hopefully give my hometown a little bit of the credit that
it deserves by means of photos and words of wisdom from the locals.
"The weather here sucks. One day it's fifty degrees and the next it's
snowing," explains Jeff Burch. Every scene has its good points, as well as
its bad points. Aside from the usual, getting kicked out of all the best
places, vibing, and a general lack of good skate spots, the worst thing
about skating in Indy is the weather. The climate here changes from one
extreme to the next at any given chance, leaving skaters freezing in the
long winter and burning in the humid summer. Travel Alternative Skate-
park on the East Side provides a haven for all skaters all year round. They
have a street-type set-up indoors that keeps the locals content during the
cold season and when it rains or snows. And Andy Hutchinson (of Dam
Skatezine) has a beautiful little mini-ramp complete with an extension
topped with pool coping at his house, but sadly, it is seldom skated.

Well, I hope that you enjoyed your visit. If you are
ever in the Indianapolis area, don't be so quick to
just pass through. Be sure to hit downtown, or on
hot summer nights, check out the North Side in
Broad Ripple to hook-up with locals. And any time
of year don't forget to stop by Travel Alternative
Skatepark, Sandy and John can help to hook you up
with a good time.
If you want to find out a little more, check-out
Don't Ask Me Skatezine (8647 Cox Road, Indiana-
polis, IN 46221) and Sty 'Zine (Send $1 to: 300
North Bryan, Bloomington, IN 47408-4144), the
longest running (and best) 'zines out of Indy. Both
will fill you in on the local scene as well as lots of
other stuff with a punk-type outlook.
