SKATEBOARDERS HELPING SKATEBOARDING
The caliber of talent coming up through the amateur ranks
is more potent than ever. With park facilities sprouting up
throughout the land and the continued use and abuse of all
street terrains, skaters are pushed to break their previous
ability levels each time they skate.
One of the premier showcases of fresh talent on the west
coast is the Powell-Peralta Skatezone in Santa Barbara. The
large indoor hangar is filled with a multitude of wooden
transitions, banks and bevels. The P/P people have been
graciously hosting skaters from up and down the west coast
with their series of Quartermaster Cups which feature entrants
belonging to teams sponsored by California retail shops.
On February 23-24, the facility was again the place to be.
The boarders helping boarders benefit raised funds for a
public skatepark in Santa Barbara. Over $5,000 was collected
over the weekend and the event was co-sponsored by the
Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Dept. In addition, an
adult-based committee was formed to look into another site
for the proposed SB "zone" after the original Boy's Club yard
was determined unsuitable.
Meanwhile, down on the smooth ramp-covered floor, 18-
year old Pat Brennan out-skated a field of 100 other competi-
tors for the individual title. Pat charged the vert wall, threw
down crazy Sal flips over the pyramid bank box, and flew huge.
ollies to backside boardslides down the rail. Right behind Pat
was P/P teammate Chris Senn who harshed out rock 'n' roll
boardslides off the high pool wall to bank landings. Along with
Frank Hirata's sixth place showing the Powell/Peralta boys
used the home park to their advantage in conquering the
manufacturer's team championships. When the wheels
stopped rolling, the results ended up as follows:

AMATEUR SKATE ASSOCIATIONS
National Skateboard Association (NSA)

Last year, using Sonja Catalano's CASL as a model,
the NSA split its power and organized affiliate amateur
skate groups in several parts of the country, reasoning
that a large California-based association couldn't
realistically organize skaters nationally. So, Linda Miller
of FASL, Tom Thornhill of TASL, Dave & Becky Selders of
HASL, and other state association heads, volunteered to
