organize local and district contests that
allowed skaters to qualify for regionals
and a national final event. Several new
am organizations have joined the pack
this year, including PASL, NEASL, NorCal
and Washington State. Still in the
planning stage are Chicago-Wisconsin
area and Utah associations.
Don Bostick, president of the NSA,
says the amateur program is still in its
infancy and urges interested skaters and
parents to set up similar skate associa-
tions in their areas. All it takes is getting
in contact with the NSA, who will help
with information on how to get set up as
non-profit agency, raise funds from local
retailers, deal with public officials and
organize parents and skaters. The NSA
offers a blanket insurance policy, which is
usually a major issue in organizing skate-
boarding. Don wants to localize things
even more, eventually having an amateur
organization in every state.

Ask most anyone and they'll tell you
that Linda Miller is the greatest skate
supporter in Florida. When someone has
a question about organizing at a local
level, the NSA usually tells them to call
Linda. Last year they proposed a budget
of $60,000 for a park designed by Tim
Payne and it's since grown to $100,000.
Linda is even holding a clinic at the
Florida Park System's annual convention
this spring on how to plan a skatepark in
your city.
FASL has already gotten over 150
new members this year. Their greatest
new addition, though, is Dr. Joel Stein,
skater and owner of S.P.O.R.T. medicine
clinics, who is helping FASL out tremen-
dously with prizes and money.

up professional quality street courses and
run the #1 East Coast amateur series.

year's championships.

Susan Whitehead has gotten her NSA
backing, gotten the state taxes and non-
profit status going, and is now on her
way to changing the face of skateboard-
ing in Penn state. She lobbies all towns,
checks in with skate shops and lets
people know that skateboarding is
definitely in their future. All PA skaters
should support her hard work.

Linda Fisher claims that Battle
Ground, WA, has the most restrictive
skateboard ordinance in the country. The
mayor hates skaters. The city council
can't promise anything and the kids are
left with nowhere to skate and a $250
fine. She hasn't given up yet, though,
and has planned a tentative contest
schedule for June, July, August, and
September.
