Skater's Edge
TRUE DEVOTION
by Bonnie Blouin
A commitment to skating can mean dif
ferent things to different people. Age, loca-
tion and experience induce different
perspectives, all of which should be
respected. A beginner can be just as
devoted as a ten-year veteran; their
outlooks are obviously different, but the
level of stoke and dedication to improve
is much the same,
Devotion has no bounds. It is not af-
tected by age, sex, experience or terrain.
It is characterized by attitude, the will, the
desire and the dedication to LIVE
skateboarding.
Your soul, or the "heart" of your being.
controls the majority of what you will or will
not do and become. It controls your mind
and your body and puts them into sync
with one another. Your mind considers the
technicalities, your body follows them
through, but your soul determines the
extent to which you will commit yourself.
Consider the moment: the final hour of
an all-day session. Your body is completely
drained and your muscles tighten, exhau-
sted, at the end of every run. More than
likely, you are attempting to perfect a parti-
cular trick-marathon runs are simply out
of the question. Your body tells you
(screams at you) to quit but your mind sug
gests that perfection can be achieved.
So, what keeps you skating for that final
hour? Not your body, because it is worked
over and only continues because you will
it to. Not your mind, because it is merely
a thinking tool that calculates, considers
and suggests that the move can be
perfected. Your soul motivates your mind
and body to perform because your soul
can truly feel the exhilaration and wor-
thiness of the achievement.
Therefore, the measure or degree to
which your soul is willing to commit itself,
despite tired body and practical mind, is
the determining factor
True devotion is not something that you
think, it's something you feel and live. It
is the dedication to commit yourself to your
goals and the perserverence to see them
through. It is an all-consuming positive-
ness that penetrates to the depths of all
doubt. Doubt, being a suggestion of the
mind, is easily obliterated by strong
positive desires of the soul.
Say the mind has doubts about landing
an early release frontside air. If you bail,
you've listened to doubts of the mind,
foregoing instincts of the soul. If you slam,
the mind was correct in its calculation, but
instincts of the soul committed you to try-
ing. If you pull it off, doubts of the mind
have been abolished by the prevailing
strength of the soul. So, in this case, true
devotion is a test the positive soul pitted
against the skeptical mind.
Therefore, a positive mindset is also
essential. Sometimes the mind must be
trained and even forced to think positively.
This is also put into action by the soul. The
mind can be trained through the repetition
of positive encounters (making a new trick)
that counterbalance the negative ones
(slamming). The already dedicated and
stoked soul assists the mind in reaching
a high level of self confidence, which leads
to positiveness in day to day skating and
in life, for that matter.
Fear, like doubt, is a suggestion of the
calculating mind. Fear may be felt, but the
soul and its instincts will always determine
whether or not it is warranted. Say you're
learning a new trick. You have mastered
the majority of the technicalities and the
only thing you have left to do is land it. But
it scares the hell out of you and you keep
bailing. (Everyone runs across this
dilemma now and then, eh?) Basically, you
are wimping out due to fear and doubts
of the mind which are completely unwar-
ranted. As usual, however, the soul and its
need for "fulfillment of the achievement"
dominates the mind and forces the body
into submission. The move is completed.
if fear within your mind overwhelms your
soul, there are three possible reasons.
Either your body is not technically advanc
ed enough to try the move, your mind
needs further training through positive
repetition (self confidence), or your soul
is simply not dedicated enough. Perhaps
all three.
So progression and personal achieve
ment are cultivated through the technical
training of the body and the positive train-
ing of the mind. The rate, however, at which
you progress and reach personal goals is
undeniably determined by the soul.
Equal in importance to the act of
skateboarding itself is one's "skate scene."
Without a scene, there would be less on-
joyment in skating and less opportunity for
personal development or terrain improve-
ment. Thus, not only is dedication to
skateboarding crucial, but also dedication
to one's scene.
The survival of a skate scene depends
upon its inhabitants. The truly devoted are
responsible for its existence, depth and ex-
pansion. This means that the skate scerie
is only as good as you make it. In the words
of Blaize Blouin, "You gotta take what you
have and make what you want, 'cause it
sure ain't gonna come to you. If you want
it, find it. If you don't have it, build it.
Dedication involves the commitment to
"seek and find," which, for the truly
devated, is something of a natural instinct.
For this reason, most devotees find that
their "skate scene eventually encom
passes a very large area. As Fred Smith
once said, "I don't live in Massachussetts,
I live on the East Coast."
Which brings us to the final phase, the
final link within a network. Friends.
Through all of your skating, travelling and
seeking of terrain, friends become a main
source of information and support,
Through friends you are offered an abun-
dance of terrain, Inspiration and a sense
of overall comradery that is invaluable and
indispensable.
When, at long last, your dedication and
commitment to skating has evolved to
such a degree that you've become an ad-
vanced and travelled skater. when you
are able to place yourself among friends
while skating terrain most anywhere in the
US you will have begun to reap the
rewards of true devotion.
All this takes, folks, is dedication, "all
positiveness" and perserverance...It
takes faith, from the soul, to LIVE
skateboarding.
