GIRLSCHOOL
Nightmare at Maple Cross
GWR/Profile, Lp
While recovering from an asthma
attack and high on Co-Tylenol, I
threw on the new Girlschool album.
Suddenly sparks started flying from
the stylus and a strange electric
glow appeared around the
speakers. My whole stereo was,
like, quaking! I turned up the
volume and the aura became a
glistening bright blue haze. My
asthma vanished and my body took
control. Soon I was go going wild-
ly all over my room. Within minutes
the three remaining members of
my family had gravitated to my
parlor of sin and were headbang-
ing with vigor. Our hair grew to
"Back for More" (fierce). "Danger
Sign" (the Girl's answer to Sweet's
"Ballroom Blitz"), and "Let's Break
Out" (not about acne). My brother
noted the album's impressive array
of howling, glam-style guitar work
and over all melodic consistency.
"It rocks," he said. Singer Kim
McAuliffe has the sharp-yet-
raunchy voice so many male
metalers attempt but replace
miserably with embarrassing
falsettos. Yeah, Kim knows she's
got the ginsu and the slice is right.
These women cut it up-ALL THE
WAY UP-so get out your jogbras
and jockstraps and revive the pogo
'cause only total scrubs don't get
down to Girlschool. JC
THE OUTPATIENTS
Free Association
Incas, Lp
Having bashed it out for well over
seven years, western Massachu
setts power-meisters, the Out-
patients, finally put their unique,
screamingly aggressive assault to
vinyl. This outfit has never really
demonstrated the hard-core
ferociousness from which their at-
tack supposedly developed
(though two tracks can be found on
Conflict fanzine's "Bands that
Could be God" compilation of
1985). In fact they always sound
much more like Motorhead. On
Free Association the influence
seems to be the new wave British
heavy metal, as the trio's approach
and vocalist/guitarist Vis Helland's
vocalizations drip with Judas
Priest/Rob Halford inflections.
Nonetheless, the Outpatients avoid
the trap that many hardcore-
turned- metal outfits fall into and
fully remember to utilize outright
speed only when necessary, as on
"Balloon Head" and "Light Blue,"
two holdovers from crash and burn

hardcore days. Though far more
talented than a host of similar out-
fits, the Outpatients still tend to
cling to boundries rather than
pushing them back. MG
MUDDY WATERS
The Original Hoochie Cochle
Man
CLEO, Cassette
This is soul on the porch music.
heavy blues roots. You can hear
where many greats like Hendrix got
their clues. This cassette is
moderately priced at $3.00. What
a bargain for hits like "One More
Mile," "The Stuff You Gotta Watch"
and "Mean Red Spider" ("She's
been spinning a web all over
town!"). The sound quality is not
very technical, but that's how this
music stands the test of time; with
its rawness and edge. Give yourself
a short history lesson and listen to
Muddy Waters. RD
MEGADETH
So Far, So Good...So What!
Capitol, Lp
While last year's Peace
Sells. But Who's Buying?
established L.A. power metal
technicians Megadeth as forerun-
ners in metal's power age. So Far,
So Good. So What? contains
eight new ditties that, unfortunate-1
ly, live up to the album's title. The
departure of drummer Gar
Samuelson and guitarist Chris
Poland, here replaced by Chuck
Behler and Jeff Young, is practical-
ly unnoticed and the weight of
Megadeth is riding solely upon
Mustaine's shrugging shoulders.
While previous releases, like
"Devil's Island," Peace Sells..
and "Mechanix" provided metal
muscle with memorability to spare,
RS

very little here cuts as deep. In-
terestingly enough, Megadeth has
enough common sense to avoid
outright speed or too much techni-
que (i.e. the sound Metallica
pioneered and excels at). Lyrical-
ly, Mustaine remains head and
shoulders above most of his con-
temporaries, with verbal har-
rangues against nuclear war, drug
abuse and, most importantly, the
PMRC! Even so, the band's cover
of the Sex Pistols' classic "Anarchy
in the UK" is far from inspired and
way too obvious a choice. This is
better than most, but, considering
it's Megadeth, this just doesn't
quite make the mark. MG
KILLDOZER
Little Baby Buntin'
Touch & Go, Lp
Three suburban Minneapolites
settled down in the backscrub of
Madison, Wisconsin (home of
cheap beer, cheese and Ed Gein),
and have distinguished themselves
by unleashing pure, in-yo-face
Freudian id impulses under the col-
lective monicker of Killdozer. All
out-of-work teachers, the members
of Killdozer create pure, unrelenting
blues. Michael Gerald's confes-
sions and stories suggest Muddy
Waters' worst nightmare. Each disc
is better than the last and Little
Baby Buntin' is no exception.
Crude, thumping musicianship,
somewhat Flipper-esque, the lines
collide head-on with fittingly brutal,
dream-like lyrics. Amazingly
though, this bunch manages to
make you laugh while poking
around under your skin. "Hi There"
haunts the listener with a particular
ly ugly look at the folks all around
us. Meanwhile, parental fixations
prove unnerving on "Ballad of My,
Old Man." A cover of Neil
Diamonds's "I Am I Said" roars
with gut-punch suave, sort of like
Dennis Hopper singing Roy Or
bison's "In Dreams" in the movie
Blue Velvet. When we are con-
fronted by the choice of good and
evil, Killdozer is the little man with
horns on our shoulder telling us to
knee people in the groin. MG
RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY
Smashed Hits
Red Rhino, Lp
If you are not familiar with RLYL,
they are an English band with at
sound reminscent of Sisters of Mer-
cy. The Mission and Fields of the
Nephilim. Some similarities are to
the deeper vocals, the eerie feel
and the drum tempo. They have
been around a lot longer than
either band but never really got the
recognition they deserved. This is
a collection of their single hits.
While I was surprised that some
singles I expected to be on it were
not, I found that what is presented
here is excellent. The guitar work
haunts with a unique whiney feel
that doesn't disturb but is ambient
throughout the whole Lp. You get
twelve tracks, including the superb
"Generation," "Monkey's on
Juice," "He's Read," "Hollow
Eyes" and the newer "Cut Down"
and "Chance". This is an excellent
Lp to check into. BS
WILLIAM ORBIT
Strange Cargo
I.R.S. No Speak, Lp
I.R.S. has just introduced a new
division called No Speak (or music
with no vocals), perhaps their en-
try into the New Age category.
Simultaneously four Lps were
released by Stewart Copeland (ex-
Police), Pete Haycock (ex-Climax
Blues Band), Wishbone Ash and
William Orbit. The most impressive
of these is William Orbit's. The en-
tire Lp was written, performed and
produced by Orbit, and what a feat
he has accomplished here. It plays
like a soundtrack to a movie, the
tempos rise up and down with the
sexual passion of a heart beat. With
a wide variety of sounds, tones and
effects, he creates a mood, a
nightmare, a sunset or just a relax-
ed atmoshpere. Orbit's instrumen-
tation captivates the mind and
leads the body to its destination of
pleasure or perhaps horror, depen-
ding on the tempo of the track. It's
space beyond space and only a few
have done it as well as this. It might
be different from what you're used
to, but it's well worth a listen. MH
