Party throwers White Trash a Go Go put on "The First Semi-Annual
Hollywood Hills Music Festival"--and what an event it was. Although there.
were no Hell's Angels in attendance and nobody gave birth, it was a wild
love-in anyway. The bands were great, bar none: The Little Kings
(for once, without Charlie Sexton), Damn Yankees with ex-Tales of
Terror member Rat's Ass joining them for a drunken version of
"Burning Love." T.S.O.L., Whores, who had just returned from tour, Redd
Kross, The Unforgiven, Dancing Hoods, House of Freaks and the
Pandoras, whose skirts were so tight and small they were almost
non-existent. The show ran from noon until midnight without incident-
no burly fights in the slam pit.
Other summer rock events were almost as cool. The Rajis live album
trash-a-thon was bitchen. All the bands played uncensored (yikes!) sets
It's unclear who is producing the record and apparently there's a bidding
war going on. On the album will be Thelonius Monster, The Hangmen
The (scrumptious) Lame Flames, Hard As Nails, Cheap As Dirt. The
Screaming Sirens, Tex and the Horseheads and The Fiends. Speak-
ing of the Horseheads, Tex has a new project called TEXORCIST, and
Horsehead Mike Matt has a new solo career.
"School's-in" tours: By the time you read this. Thelonius Monster
should be on tour in support of their new album, Next Saturday Afternoon.
D.O.A. is touring North America again during October. The Untouchables
will soon embark on a tour. Border Radio, the much talked about
underground movie featuring John Doe of X. The Blasters, Chris D.
The Lazy Cow Girls, Iris Berry of The Lame Flames and others, is now
the midnight movie at cult theater The Nuart. Border Radio should be
playing nation-wide soon.
Henry Rollins' new Ep, Drive By Shooting, should be turning a few
heads by now. Amazingly, the six songs featured were written before last
summer's rash of highway pot shots down L.A. way. We always knew
Henry was bright-but clairvoyant?
On June 2, 1986, Jello Biafra, vocalist of the rock group Dead Kennedys
and four others were charged with violating one count each of California
Penal Code Section 313.1, Distribution of Harmful Matter to Minors, a
misdemeanor that carries a possible fine of $2,000 and a maximum
sentence of one year in jail. The charge centered around a record album,
Frankenchrist, by Dead Kennedys on Alternative Tentacles Records. (Some
readers may have gotten this album as a subscription giveaway from
THRASHER in October 1985.) Enclosed as an integral part of the album
was a poster reproduction of a painting by world-renowned artist H.R.
Giger, who is best known in America for his Academy Award winning
set design for the 1980 movie Alien. Thursday, August 27, the jury indicated
a deadlock at seven for dismissal and five for conviction. Prosecutor
Guarino attempted to petition the court for a rehearing, but Judge Isacoff
denied the motion and dismissed the charges. Some jurors voted for
acquittal on First Amendment grounds. Others stated that they felt the
law regarding censorship was too vague. Biafra says, "We're very happy
it turned out this way and that the charges were tossed in the dumpster,
where they belong. If law enforcement officials really wanted to protect
the public at large, they could concentrate on white collar crime, toxic
waste, etc., instead of self-serving prosecution like this, which is designed
to play-up to certain political groups. If any of us would have been
convicted a precedent would have been set where an artist or crew
member, working on a project that someone deemed obscene, would
be responsible for the whole project...That would have been a terrifying
chill factor because people would be afraid to even associate themselves
with certain ideas...People would have to think twice before saying or
creating what they believe in. That in itself is censorship! So we have won
this round, but the battle goes on. It would be a mistake to wash our
hands of the whole problem and pretend this is a happy ending. NO!!!
This is just a chapter."
What about outside California? That remains to be seen, but realize
that a crusade has been launched by types who want to censor what
you can see and hear. Do your best to fight similar abuses of the law
in your area. Fighting any charges of this type can be very costly. A good
amount of money was raised to help pay the costs of the trial. However,
more is needed to pay for existing legal fees and to fight like charges
in the future. Send contributions to: NO MORE CENSORSHIP Defense
