            GOOFING
by Brian Brannon
OFF
Four roulette wheels spun afire while the
gambler rode the pass line.
Elsewhere, another gamester shuffled his
deck with grace and ease, impressing a
voluptuous young starlet with his cool fin-
esse. But on the next hand the pool won,
and the player cashed in his chips for cold
concrete.
Skaters are gamblers, and the world is
their casino.
Some prefer crap games and throw street
plants.
Others risk all and spend their lives going
downhill.
No matter how you cut it, variety, chance
and skill are what it's all about. The game
you play and the odds you take are up to you.
Joust This friendly contest was seen in the
movie Thrashin'. The object is simple: to pum-
mel your opponent into oblivion using whatever
means necessary, such as a lance, a stick or
your bare hands. The rules are minimal to
nonexistent. As in all skate games, the rider
must remain on board if he is able and the last
one riding wins.

THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY: (oppo
site page) While many of the Venice
beach boys play for keeps, wall ramp
sessions at the pavilion are usually held
in the name of fun and games. Christian
Hosoi clings to a rather high four-
wheeled launch.
AN OLLIE FOR AN OLLIE: (this pager
Mark Gonzales and Natas Kaupas trade)
pops over a burly barbed wire obstacle
in a skate adaptation of the basketball
game horse, where you have to do
whatever the other guy doon. Not many
can keep up with the Gonz and the Nats
in the ollie department.
HORSE
Call It Here's a good one for you ramp brats. As
a skater rides up the transition-but before he
hits the vert-the skate master "calls it." He can
say either backside or frontside air or grind or
whatever is chosen before play begins. If you
make it, you make it. If you hang, die or other-
wise draw blood, you lose.
Pipe Pasting Not all skate games require
boards. This one may or may not. If your trusty
skate is at your side, use it. If not, bummer for
yuh. See how high you can paste a sticker on the
wall. Of course, instead of going for height, you
I can also go for the most obvious place. Examples
