RIPPING:
FLYER
Ever wanted to put on your own event? Weeks of painstaking research
and the vast resources of THRASHER have gleaned the following in-
formation. Remember, however, you can't judge a contest by its flyer.
We're talking about the publicity here--not the events.
TYPICAL:
Attract
an elite crowd by posting your flyers at the last minute. That way
only people you know personally will show up.
Gain the eternal animosity of the influential by including their shops/publica-
tions/etc. in your event without their knowledge or consent.
Confound your would-be contestants and spectators with obscure direc-
tions and vague dates.
Delight magazine editors with requests for free merchandise. Our editor
laughs for hours.
Feature prominent and pointless illustrations. They are eye-catching and
take up space. Forget lists of contestants, judges, prizes or maps.
With-it people know this stuff anyway. If need be, cram your in-
fo in the margins.
Broadcast your event with a headline even a mother won't miss.
Command crowds with easy-to-read dates, places and directions and maps.
Dazzle the masses with your ingeniously planned events, or roster of attending
pro skaters or prizes.
Thrill the illiterate with discreet and tasteful illustrations of rats, skulls and
betties.
Beat the competition by getting your flyers out early. Word of mouth can travel
a long way in a little time but don't rely entirely on word of mouth.
Promote
your event with shops, schools, zines, whatever you've got in your
area. You might get lucky and pick up a sponsor for prizes.
Otherwise...
Invent or provide prizes for the winners. BK sez pizza makes a good prize. So
does ice cream.
One way or the other, if your contest is fun, it's a success. Go forth and Xerox.
