SHINE THAT NOISE
with Rick Blackhart
My friend and I have lappers on our boards
to help us get up square curbs and stairs.
They really smooth out the rough edges.
But the stupid things vibrate too much on
the asphalt. No matter how hard I tighten
it on to my trucks it just won't become flush
with the surface of the board. So when we
ride down the street they rattle like heck
and attract to much negative attention from
the neighbors. What do you suggest we do
to stop this noise?
David Schoch

One sure-fire easy way to stop it would
be to toss that baby right in the trash.
Then maybe you'll earn how to skate
without a crutch.
NOISY NEIGHBOR
You seem to be fairly well-informed so I
will take up this problem with you. I am
planning to build a halfpipe in the Spring
and since I live in an attached house I know
my neighbors are going to moan. Therefore
my structure must be as quiet as possible.
Please fill me in on the latest methods.

O.K., here's another one I've answered
before. But just for the sake of a new
generation I guess I'll go through it again.
Ramp noise. There are all kinds of ideas
and ways to quiet down that ramp. Just
to quickly reel off a few, you can: caulk
all seams, stuff the back with blankets,
some rampers have been known to pour
sand or even cement behind the tranny
for muffling and extra support. Mainly
just fill up that empty space behind the
riding surface, that's where the noise
comes from. It's that area under the tran-
sition that amplifies when you ride over
it. Anyway, try these or maybe think up
some of your own ideas. You have to
keep in mind that skating was not meant
to be quiet. It's usually kind of a loud.
annoying type of thing and who knows.
maybe the kind of thing that ultimately
should not be tampered with!
DOGGIN' IT
This is a letter about consumers. What
would you do if you just bought a new deck.
you skate it for one week. (ramp, street)
and you break it doing your everyday run
of the mill trick? You're out $50, you re now
out $100 to replace it. That could throw out
your wallet in no time. What would you do?
Dave Seoane

Well, I'll tell ya. There's one very old
saying that sums up your situation per-
fectly. "You can't run with the big dogs
if you're going to piss like a pup." Mean-
ing if you want to skate and be rad then
you'll have to pay the price.
WISHING NO WELLS
I have been street skating for a long time
and I have this problem with wheel wells. So
far I have had three boards which cracked
right in the same spot-the wheel wells, I
don't see why big skateboard companies
need to cut wheel wells in their decks. I
can see why for those who like their trucks
extra-loose to carve snake runs, but when
jumping quads and wedges the deck takes
a lot of stress in this area.
I have been looking around for compa-
nies who all-together don't use wheel wells
in their decks and Santa Cruz is the only
one I came up with. The problem is that I
am used to riding boards by other well-
known companies. Should I write to other
companies to explain to them this problem
and to see if something can be done? Per-
sonally, what do you feel about wheel wells?
Many of my friends have this same problem
also. I see that G.S.D. finally did away with
his wheel wells,

I kind of like wheel wells myself. Never
had much problem with breakage, and
if you've ever been pitched by a vicious
wheel bite (when the wheel stops dead
by rubbing against the deck) then you
might understand the wheel well theory
more. Most of the time when a board
breaks from stress it will start in the well
area. A thicker board with wheel wells
works to eliminate the problem. If it really
bums you out so much then go ahead
and take your beef to the manufacturer
of your choice. I'm sure someone will
be able to set you up with a board of
your liking.
