Leroy stands there at the Hagernas train
depot feeling like he's been beat to shit with a
month old dirty sock filled with fouled brussel
sprouts. Hagernas is just a few miles outside
Stockholm, and the skate camp is about a
twenty minute mile, walk (complete with
luggage) from the depot.
As it turns out, what was supposed to be an
overnight train ride from Hamburg, Germany in
fact changed into a two-day sidetrack trip via
Oslo, Norway
What happened was that Leroy didn't know
that, when travelling on overnight sleeper
trains it is imperative that one reserves
seats, because at night the trains are like
over-stuffed sardine cans. Thus he found
himself kicked off the train in a town called
Lubeck, Germany where there were absolutely
no english speaking "red-cappers," just
asshole ones.
For the first time this trip he felt despon-
dency; faced with a potentially long night
awaiting another train in the direction of
correctness.
Trudging along like a weary dog who'd
missed the gravy train, head down, hopes
down, toes dragging, he came upon two young
women, who, from dispositive expressions,
looked like they'd just experienced his very
same dilemma, ejected from the same train he
was. Those stewards can be cold bastards
without even trying.
Approaching them, he softly asked if they
perhaps, by any slim chance, speak english, or
anything close to english. "Entertain me with
swear words," he said.
"Yes we speak a little english," one of them
said, a dark tanned beauty with long dark hair
slightly amuss from long weary hours of train
travel. The other girl looked up, surprised,
her sandy blonde hair brushing across her
clear and golden cheeks, revealing her smile
which beamed like the first sunshine after the
first rain, after the first day of the beginning of
forever.
The girls were on a return trip to Oslo,
Norway from a holiday on the coast of Spain.
When Leroy turned the conversation towards
skateboarding the dark haired girl related that
her sister's boyfriend had a ramp where he
rode back and forth, back and forth, across
and in the air too.
"Why don't you come to Oslo to shoot your
skateboarding, huh? Oslo is beautiful city. We
love Oslo, you come there, yes?"
TAKE TWO, THREE, FOUR
Leroy's tired and weary from travelling too
damn hard, for this much time, straight
through. That stint to Norway almost did him in.
It turned out to be raining hard in Oslo, the
ramp was wet, the streets were wet. It was wet.
No ramp session, just a good telephone
conversation with one of the locals who told of
just returning from the Scandanavian Open,
where he saw Bill Ruff and some ominous
skating by Nicki Guerrero and many others.
Leroy also learned that, up until recently,
skateboarding had been outlawed by the
government and is only legal now with certain
restrictions.
Leroy left Oslo the same night he arrived,
after some hard-boiled eggs, some delightful
chatter about the legend of "The hard water,"
and about how much the girls love their
country and wouldn't go to the United States
for anything.
