From the remote Hagernas station, he
follows a little hand- scribbled map, trudging
through the early morning air, feeling tired as a
stallion in a herd of mares, but still with a
feeling of some sort of accomplishment, no
problems with any authorities yet.
There is a makeshift barracks sort of deal,
where several international skaters are
housed. It's 8:30 a.m., Leroy approaches the
structure like a hungry 5,000 pound bear
descending upon a Girlscout campsight. Once
inside, he asks the first akater he sees.
"Where's Lance Mountain and Tony Hawk?"
"Hey, what in the hell are you doing over here
in Sweden?" Lance says as Leroy stumbles in,
his eyes looking like diced strawberry pulp.
I'm looking for a place to die!" Leroys says,
diving into an empty bunk. Within minutes he
was into many snores although, from experi-
ence, everyone knew he'd deny it.
The Swedish Skateboard Summer camp, at
times referred to as Eurocana, was on it's last
leg of operation for the season. This is a place
where skaters from all over the world come to
learn to skate better, with instruction from
some top American professionals. Lance
Mountain, Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen
teach some of the finer points of the art/activity.
Rodney conducts his business over behind a
large building, with a handful of freestylers,
while Lance and Tony demonstrate the finer
points of camp riding technology, on a larger
than life ramp which was constructed on the
grounds just adjacent to a large ocean
inlet-styled geographic location. Around the
bend was a small beach where, when the sun
was beaming down, bronze Swedish topless
sunbathing beauties would garnish the
waterline with their salivating presence.
The food at the camp at times reached
unedible proportions. Sealed in suprise metal
containers, the skaters attending camp were
treated to such strange food assemblages,
there wasn't even any names for them. That, or
the name was worse than the taste. Leroy's
first evening found him eating at the restaurant
in the yellow house along with Grant Brittain
and a few of the more less inhibited Swede
skaters, ones who weren't even there to attend
the camp (but they knew the food was bad),
they just lived nearby.
As they ate, Grant purchased a bottle of
wine for dinner. Right after it was served, at the
only other occupied table in the establishment,
an elderly gentleman fell into fits, gagging and
choking, sounding like on the road to death.
Leroy and Grant perplexedly looked at each
other, both semi-versed in certain first-aid
areas, but not knowing why the rest of the
guy's family weren't responding.
How do you say, "Is this man dying?', in
Swedish?" Leroy questioned.
DISCO-TWO, THREE, FOUR
That very evening, in the basement of the
restaurant in the yellow house, a Discoteque
was set up. All the skaters took two showers
before attending. It was a small disco, with
about forty people attending, twenty-nine of
which were blonde goo-goo-ga-ga Swede
betties, as well as some local Swedish
construction workers who specialized in
dynamite.
Sordid bouts of non-dance related frenzies
occur which include an American history
lesson given by visiting Floridan, as well as
Grant convincing all the Swedes that Leroy is
really an ex-Green Beret, special forces
veteran from Vietnam, sensitive to the subject
and that he enjoys bodybuilding, painting.
photography, dancing, going to movies and if
ever in a fight, he'd much rather get punched in
the face first, because it angers him most,
allowing him to draw instant conclusions to
any altercation.
Leaving the Yellow House Restaurant
discoteque, Grant kindly extends a slight
rapport to the group of now-drunk large
Swedish construction workers.
"Eat shit and die Mother-1, he says,
then muses moments later, stating, "Those
guys probably didn't understand a word I said."
In fact Leroy doesn't come to think much of
it, until after he's tried to hot-wire Lance and
Tony's violently spray-painted Peugeot sedan
to Stockholm (he has no idea of it's whereab-
outs) and is then confronted by five or six, over
six foot, over two hundred pound, drunk
Swedish construction workers.
The rest is history and will probably be
talked about for many years to come in Swedish
folklore and songs.
LEROY? A Toast
SKATE-TWO, THREE, FOUR
Although Leroy does not feel well the next
few days, he makes efforts to visualize as
much skating as possible. The skaters session)
sporadically, some of them dashing about the
area on excursions of their own concotion.
Lance and Tony make fifty-three trips to the
record store in town. Lance, Leroy is told, was
also pointed at for abusing a certain German
skater, to a minor extent. Apparently the
un-named victim had borrowed Lance and
Tony's car without permission and hit a rock,
resulting in a fair dent. Lance, upon learning
that the German victim has no plans for
making good of the damages, promptly saws
the tail off the victim's board and then takes
scissors to all of his Speedos, cutting out all
the crotches for that extra-French look
There are two good reasons Leroy curses
the Swedish Sun God for the bleary weather:
1) it's bad for photography, creating dull, flat,
grey-looking images and 2) because it meant
no girls would come to the beach.
The only time the weather was clear was
near and around dusk, occurring near the ninth
evening hour
On one such occasion, a few Swedes are
skating like certain types of bombs and
rockets. They have names, some of which
Leroy can not pronounce, plus he has a bad
memory. The one's he remembers are Sloppo,
Hans Gotheberg, Magnus, a blondeguy with
glasses who sort of looks a little bit like John
Denver, a Dane named Sorn and some
mysterious guy in a 'nippon' shirt that everyone
calls Wayne Gretske No. 68 or No. 86.
Magnus and Mr. Bi-focal have a splendid,
balls-out approach to their riding style,
slashing about aggressively. Hans Gothberg's
frontside footplant booster airs are unreal,
everyone takes notice of them, especially
when he lands and the whole bigger than
life-sized ramp shakes. Sloppo, the insatiable,
good-hearted sponge, flies maybe the highest
of anyone, one flight, eight feet above a four
foot extension above a twelve foot ramp.
Whenever he fell, he screams, "FI FAEN!!!" The
equivalent of "Oh, shit."
Sorn, a Danish vertical ripper, who, at only
fourteen years old is promising to be one hot
future talent, as is evident, as from what
everyone has been saying.
