GETTING DOWN TO BASICS

Beginning skaters tend to go about
things backwards. This is sometimes
caused from watching more advanced
peers pull off gnarly tricks and making
them seem smooth and easy. A beginner
will probably never see a rad skater do an
easy, basic trick so the beginner might
ignore basic tricks and right away try to
learn a boneless one, an invert or some air
moves, usually resulting in a discouraging
munch that leaves his body and ego
bruised Learning to skate is like learning
to do anything else; it's got to be taken one
step at a time, one thing leading to another.
A beginning skater must go through the
moves, the simple basics, just to learn the
feel of the board and get his balance down
Before any hard maneuver can be attemp-
ted these simple aspects of skating have to
become second nature. Practice is what it !
takes if you want to get away from the
confines of simple tricks, and into the air.
The best idea for a beginner to get in
some constructive practice is to find some
other skaters at about your level and skate
with them on a regular basis. You will be
able to go over basic tricks (frontside and
backside kickturns, carves, grinds, rock
walks, etc.) together and coach each other
into taking chances and learning more.
Soon you will be beyond the basics and
well into developing your own style as you
learn successively harder tricks. As you
gain a better sense of balance, things that
you could never have done a few weeks
before will seem basic.
When you start skating in close quarters
with others, (on banks, ramps, pools,
curbs, etc.) always respect fellow skaters
and try to ride on most of the terrain. For
example, don't go to a happening spot and
end up doing the same kicktum on one wall
for the whole session. By skating all over
the place you will develop versatility and
be able to make different types of transi
tions. Don't take it too seriously if you don't
seem to be able to pull a certain trick off.
The best thing to do if you start getting
frustrated and making mistakes is to forget
about that maneuver for awhile and go on
to something else. The object of skating is to
have a good time, not to get stressed out
about not being able to so some trick. Give
it some time and concentrate on the basics
leading up to this trick. Try and create a

Figure out which basic steps are involved
in the maneuver and go over it in your head
before you try it again. When learning new
tricks, try and work on more than one at a
time. Alternate between tricks on your
runs, don't let yourself get burnt out or give
up if you're having a bad day, do some
basic tricks for awhile if nothing else is
happening
Above all, always remember to strap on
the safety gear before raging. Part of
learning to skate is falling down. The
radder you get, the harder it's going to
grind when you do fall down, so, wrist
guards, helmet, knee and elbow pads and
good shoes are a must. The safer you feel,
the fewer inhibitions you have and the
better skater you will become. As always,
try and hold on to a positive mental attitude
while you skate, and walk, through life.
