ACTION NEW ENGLAND
SKATEBOARD TITLES
Narragansett, R.I.
June 25, 1983
There was some radikal thrashing
both on and off the contest grounds at
the 1st annual ACTION New England
Skateboard Titles, held on June 25, at
the Narragansett Community Center.
"Doc" Colin Couture, Executive Direc-
tor of the ESA and dedicated skate
madman, ran the event. A very gnarly
% pipe was constructed especially for
the contest and driven to the contest
site the night before the meet. Skate
dogs from all over the Northeast came
to collect over $500.00 in prizes, as
well as trophies. Unfortunately, there
was some unexpected thrashing be-
fore the contest that did not please the
local police (see enclosed article).
Over 50 contestants competed in sev-
eral categories, but the main focus
was on the Ramp Riding final in the
Men's division. Steve O'Hara, last
year's undisputed Junior champ, pulled
off some spectacular airlifts up and
over vertical, as well as a few
backside handplants off the coping,
There was quite a bit of radical shred-
ding, but many of the finalists could
not maintain control after a maneuver.
Steve Souza was the most casual of
all, but not quite as radical as O'Hara.
Mike Paugh was the HULKMAN of the
meet, pulling off several car jumps
and winning the distance jump of 13
feet, 6 inches with jotally unconscious
moves. Teddy Pan took the Menehune
title again, as he did last year, with
several new tricks in his routine. He is
only 6 years old, and local boyz ex-
pect him to be shredding in a few
years. Following are the results, with
only the prize and trophy winners
listed.

MIDDLETOWN, OHIO
PHEASANT RAMP
Skate crews from Indiana, Wiscon
sin, Kentucky, and Ohio began to roll
in Thursday, the 14th. All were bum-
med out to find the ramp, 16 feet wide,
8 feet high, 12 feet of flat, couldn't be
skated due to a new coat of varethane,
this didn't matter because a trip to the
Sealy banks fulfilled most of the skat-
ers desire to shred.
On Friday, skaters from Tennessee
and Michigan arrived, as did skaters.
from West Virginia. Practice sessions
lasted past midnight, thanks to lights
brought by the Indiana contingency.
At the start of the contest, there were
38 skaters from 7 states entered in
this backyard event. I was not one of
the 38, for I had injured my knee the
day before.
The contest got started around 11
or 12 o'clock Saturday. Since so many
unsponsored skaters were entered
each rider received 1 run and a cut
was made to determine the 1a and 2a
divisions.
In 1a, Marty Richardson from Michi-
gan ripped inverts and backside airs
to take 1st. Chris Metz from Kentucky
took 2nd with lap-over grinds, pus
airs, and my knee pads.
Tennessee skaters swept the 2a di-
vision. Batmite took 1st by blasting
palm grab' frontsides and the highest
frontside ollies. In 2nd place, Lyle
Donaho blazed two runs which includ-
ed 4 consecutive invert variations.
In the sponsored division, we were
blessed with 8 skaters in all. Bill Dan-
forth from Michigan grabbed the 1st
place spot. He ripped with tricks like
front-side-foot-plants, high bone airs
and even 360 front side airs. Semi-
local Marty Jimenez took 2nd by
somehow making moves like roto-
rooters and layback varials.

UNDERGROUND EVENT
I am writing to inform the skate
world of an exciting skateboard con-
test which took place last weekend
(June 18) in Elgin, Illinois. Organized
and judged by two skatepunks, John
and Dain, the contest was held on a
40 foot long steel halfpipe. The con-
test began at about 12:30 after an
hour long practice session.
There were about ten competitors,
all of which were doing some radical
maneuvers. Each skater took two 45
second runs. Bill Schneider won fifth
place with his aggressive style.
Miles Horton got fourth; third place
was taken by Tim, who pulled off
gnarly grinds and cess slides. Cindy
did inverts flawlessly, proving how
radical a girl can get. Tory won first
place with ease. He did lay back
airs, rock-n-roll board slides, and the
most incredible move of the day, a
frontside ollie pipe transfer, from one
half pipe into another one about
three feet away. More and more
skaters arrived throughout the after-
noon and soon there were about 25
or 30 skaters and spectators. It was
a highly successful event.

As I watched most of the skaters
clear out, I thought of how really big
this contest was. None of the spec-
tators left disappointed either. I had so
much fun and I couldn't even skatel! I CASL #4 7/9/83
want to thank all the sponsors who do- SKATE RANCH, DEL MAR

the competition before 10 a.m. As at
each contest in the past, we signed up
a number of new skaters, bringing the
total to date to approximately 115,
averaging about 70 per contest.
The first event of the day was the
pool competition held in the half-pipe.
This was not everyone's favorite pool,
many favoring the key-hole, but in no
time the skaters were inventing a var-
lety of radical lines. Owen Nieder,
sporting a broken finger, did some
awesome backside and frontside airs
and inverts on a borrowed long board.
Greg Ducolon and Terence Yoshizawa
proved that you can skate to almost
any kind of music(?)...I use the term
loosely. Not to be outdone was roller-
skater Jimi Scott, who ended his rou-
tine with a flip over the fence. Chris
Ortiz, who usually can be seen snap-
ping pictures, took the purple heart for
the day, sporting a massive hipper. He
still came back to take 4th in the pool
and 7th in slalom.
The Sponsored skaters always
seem to be at the center of excitement
at the contests. Kevin Staab took first
in the half-pipe with radical backside
airs, backside footplants, mute airs,
inverts, etc. Ken Park, proof positive
that skating can be fun anytime, any
place, took second with Eddie Reate-
gui third, and Steve Steadham 4th.
Fifth through seventh went to Adrian
Demain, Gary Sanderson, and Dave
Bedore. The three skaters tied high
scores but Adrian edged out his
closest competition (Gary) by %o of a
point.
In the slalom event, sponsored
skater Bill Swartzbaugh was first and
fastest, edging out Steve Steadham
(2nd), Pete Finian (3rd), Eric Nash
(4th) and Chris Robison (5th).
