            DEVILS PIT
3RD ANNUAL FOGTOWN
CONTEST
Little Luis Cruz throws it up and out at the Devil's Pit
Just as I began this article I got a
call from a friend who had been out of
touch for a while. As I was filling him in
on the latest news I decided to pass
along the part about the Devils Pit
contest, held on July 24, to you.
"Hey, Kev, what's been happening
on the skate front lately?"
Well, Chuck, lemme tell you about
this contest that I had the dubious
honor of judging. It took place last
week at a local skate spot called the
Devils Pit in Pacifica, CA. I mean, I
was blown away by the energy levels.
We've been skating the place for a
while now. Croft and the locals, well,
you know, they've been skating it for-
ever, but anyway, by the time we got
there Sunday, bout 12 noon, the
place was rimmed with about 150
spectators, hootin' and carrying on.
Practice was already well under way.
It was funny tho' 'cause Chris Cook,
who was the local favorite and com-
pletely dominates the place, didn't
even show until I got there. He has the
place wired.
Anyway, it was cool, the spectators
were all skaters, though most of them
hadn't ever skated the place before.
The Jaks were there. As a matter of
fact, Seattle chapter members, Jak
Bill and Jak Chester did really well in
the unsponsored division. Of course,
the rest of the squad that were in at-
tendance got into some heavily spi-
rited spectating. Some of the other
more visible observers surrounding
the bowl were: Joe Lopes, he's got the
bio ramp over in San Leandro; original
Pit crew locals, Paul Williams and
Mike Notmeyer (Mike's son Jesse is
just startin' to shred there, talk about
second generation). There were girls
there too, including one cute gal I had
met at Go Skate in San Mateo the day
before. Even coach Fausto showed
up with his family, wife Gwen and little
Anthony. It was great.
"So, you judged the contest?"
Yeah. Me, Croft and Chris, you
know, Oosterbaan, rooster. He was in
those photos of the pit we ran last
month. He totally shreds all terrains.
Anyway it worked out pretty
good. We qualified each guy with two
runs, took the top six from there and
threw them into a half hour jam ses-
sion. Sheez, after all the various
scores were tallied the top three guys
were only one point apart. Local, Jeff
Littlefield, got first with 512, Jak Bill
from Walla Walla, had 511 and local
ooksie protege, Mike Moughler, wound
up with 512 points. Pretty tight, huh?
Even the sponsored was close.
There were only 8 guys entered in this
division so we went right into two 20
minute jams with them. Everybody
knew Cook was the man to beat. I'm
sure, the guy would drop in and imme-

diately carve up the whole bowl within
the first 12 seconds, and the place
isn't tight either. His speed lines at the
Pit are intense, then he'd go into a few
side-to-side tricks like boneless ones,
shove-its, even fuggin' caballerials.
Fish was right in there behind Cook.
Carlos de Fogtown would announce
his name and everyone would look
around for Fish and he'd come drop
ping in out of a tree into the bowl. Right,
off this little tree fort-like platform.
Fully crazed. Tommy Guerrero was
right there. He always comes up with
cool moves. He was doing a back-to-
frontside aerial 180" that was pretty
trick. Little Luis Cruz captured fourth,
he needs some more power but has
plenty of tricks. He'll go for it if you chodder was giving the thumbs up

and heading back down the trail.
"Sounds pretty good."
Hey, it was the funniest contest I've
been to in a long time. Nobody walked
away from the Devils Pit that day who
wasn't stoked on skating. There were
more people there than at the last Pro
contest I went to at Upland. Carlos
had a good idea when he decided to
throw the 3rd Annual Fogtown at the
Pit. Shit, even the cops showed up. An
officer walked up during the spon-
sored competition, everybody just
kept hootin' and the skaters kept skat-
in while Carlos' roommate, Greg
Schroeter, explained the situation.
Pretty soon I looked over and the
After the thing was over everyone
threw their beer and pop cans into the
bowl. Most of them were aiming at one
crazed punk who was giving an im-
promptu demo, he finally got hit by a
watermelon, Carlos provided trash
bags and after a brisk clean-up ses-
sion we all left the 'Pit' cleaner than we
found it. Oh, Carlos wanted to thank
the other sponsors who helped with
prizes. They were: Variflex, Skate
Station, Powell, Gullwing Zorlac and
Seaflex.
Until next time, keep skating under-
ground. Y Que.
