young talent everyday. Newtron photo.

provided the L.A. Amateurs with a
regular schedule of events, and a
chance for skaters to compare notes.

FLASH: Ron Informed us just before
press time that Surf N' Turf shut its
doors for good recently.
creative progression, signifying the start of
a whole new era in skateboarding. We
have come a long way in a very short time.
Skateboarding is definitely its own sport
now, individual in its form, in its terrain, in
its expression, and its people. The future is
now and tomorrow, the way has been
made...no telling what great things lie
ahead...keep skating and progressing..
HIGHLIGHTS
Freestyle is brought back to life again,
this time to stay and dominate. Mullen,
Rocco, Holknekt, Welinder, Desiderio,
Hamish and crew, Harris, Butterfield,
Rouse all converged from different points
of the world to make a statement. The
statement was media; the media, the
world's sleek populace, and Joe Skater on
the street picked up on it real-fast. Finally,
the manufacturers got on the ball and
realized once again that freestyle was
definitely happening.
Steve Caballero and Mike McGill
toured Sweden, Scotland and England.
They had a great trip and said the skate
scene in each country was hot.
The California Cowboys, a feature-
length motion picture that stars Jimmy
McNichol, Ethan Wayne, Tim Van
Patten, Mike McGill and Steve
Caballero was filmed on location in Spain.
The film is about the life of seven California
boys and what goes on when they have to
rescue a friend in Mexico. It includes some
rather hot footage of Mike and Steve
ramp-shredding. They both skate and act
in the movie.
Kona Skatepark continues to do
exceptionally well. What are they doing to
keep getting all those skaters to return?
The Rusty Harris series was formed
and executed successfully. Contests
included pro-am freestyle, pool, and
slalom. This was a first of its kind, and it
worked beyond all expectations. Thanks
Frank Hawk, Hoffman, moms and dads,
and the parks.
The ASPO series turned into the
CASL and ran a very tight amateur circuit.
Backyard ramps are being built in
every civilized country. Locals are shining
officialdom and holding their own contests.
⚫Skaters all over are printing their own
magazines with their own form of expres-
sion. (They are asked to write stories in
school, some find it hard; they are not
asked to write their own magazines, this.
they find easy.)
THRASHER Magazine is growing
bigger in size and circulation monthly.
The economy is down, but skate-
boarding is up.
The Scottish and English skateboard
associations continue to run contests and
promote the sport.
Aerials got over five feet.
Skateboarding again became hot
property for television shows and TV
commercials.
THRASHER Mag is printing photos
and entries from readers. Other mags tried
that lightweightedly but never carried it
through properly.

was one of the first airborne pool
