A Mad, Mad Look at Skateboarding in 1983.
'82 In Review
Here we go into 1983. "Hey, what
excitement," call the relatives and tell
them. But don't forget to tell them how
good '82 was. 1982 was a good year; in
fact, it surpassed everyone's expectations.
Many new developments and innovations
happened that had totally positive effects
on the sport; the credit belongs to everyone
though, it's not just a few people, it's the
entire world of skateboarding that is
responsible...a new direction, a new era.
The direction set is self-sufficient fun. If
the officialdom of society can't supply you
with what you want, you can create it
yourself, which seems to be the standard
being set by today's modern skaters.
Visibility. Skateboarders and the
masses. The people never came to
skateparks, so bring it to the people.
"When a park closes, skateboarding
activity in the area increases." Craig
Ramsay said it. Craig was a hardcore
Winchester Skatepark local to the end, and
that's about all. Lately, he's been editor of
the San Jose Skate Ripper, builder of
numerous ramps (Summit IV, most
notably), manages Faction Productions
(Steven Caballero's band), writer, photo-
grapher, and most definitely, skater. You
may be hearing from him on that, or any
other subject in the future.
Craig's story applies to a whole network
of boarders out there who are making
things happen. Some were park rats, some
just thriving on pools and ramps, and still
others, like Gary "Skate" Davis of Cincin-
nati, Ohio, just traversed every skateable.
surface available. Now, all are uniting
under a thrashing skate front.
With the advent of the half-pipe ramp
and simple xerox skate ragzines, of which
GSD's "Skate Fate" was a first, skaters
have a skating and communications
network that has banded the world's skate
populace together. There is a tremendous
amount of camaraderie going on. Skaters
in Ohio can read Puttis Jacobbson's
Locals mag and know what they are doing
in Sweden. Skaters in California can read
Ridgeway's monthly Shredder and know
what's happening in West Virginia. This
isn't no lightweight B.S. either, we're
talking about some informative, humorous,
and creatie rags. It's not the quality, it's
the content. Britt Parrot and pal Lyle
Donohue are making Altered Skates mag.
running their own ramp contests and
participating in other ramp contests in
outlying states; serious fun... Why wait for
a contest when you can form one yourself?
Yeah, '82 has definitely been a year of
