Ramp insurance? Phillip Mattison of
New Brighton, Minnesota, has a ramp in
his backyard, for his son, and inquired
about ramp insurance. After having one
policy cancelled (the insurance company
probably saw a copy of THRASHER),
Phil's broker checked around for new
coverage, even going to Lloyd's of London,
and received firm "nooooo's" all the way
around. They (insurance companies) just
don't want to deal with it," says Phil. Hey! If
there's any insurance salesman fathers
out there who can help out...definitely a
future concern for the fastest growing
backyard sport in America.
Madision Blues: That recent attempt, in
Madison, Wisconsin, to ban skateboarding
on downtown sidewalks and business
areas? Well, it passed, says Robin
Davies, skater/bassist for skateband Tar
Babies. This was despite petitions, letters
from businesses and attendance at City
Council meetings by the local skaters. So
what else is new! They probably passed
the same ordinance back in '77 but forgot
about it until skaters recently started
swarming the streets.
Southern Notes...Birmingham, Alabama,
slalom ace, Mark Eddings, was seen
backstage at the Who concert in B'ham.
Placing stickers in strategic locations, no
doubt.
Street Scott never ceases to amaze
himself. After gandering the dynamite
spread of Cheryl Rixon in the November
Issue of Oui magazine, S.S. has expressed
his utmost profound desires as to where to
place the next pair of THRASHER stickers.
Cheryl Rixon, Australia's awesome rock
blonde and her gorgeous, voluptuous,
centerfold backups, compose "Lust Rock"
in the band Rixon. Cheryl was unavailable
for comment at press time, but someone
said he knew her brother and he says
she'd probably like the coverage. Re-
member, you heard it here first. Look for
further details in future issues of
THRASHER and Oul. For a Tragedy!!! The
"THRASHER sticker-in-the-weirdest-place
contest." Send in your snapshot of a
THRASHER sticker in a weird place.
Entries will be judged on originality and
winners will receive a THRASHER
Tragedy T-shirt and a one day supply of
THRASHER stickers.
DOG SKATE DOG
Dogs are fast becoming the only other
life form that can rip on the ramps. Puppies
(apparently mistaking the old tales of
Dogtown for a sort of modern-day "Rin-Tin-
Tin) have reportedly been shredding
havoc and a little fur, with insane drop-ins
and one-leggers. Some of the most rad
dogs are Pee-Wee (S. Caballero's dog).
Cedar (Steve Thatcher's dog), Dog
(Moto's ex-dog that ran away), Sid
(Lamar's hound), the pitbull at Joe Lopes'
ramp out of California, and Barney, the
stray green dog from Ekalaka, Montana.
Send in photos of your favorite K-9 ripper
so it may be considered for a future "Skate
Dog" article.
Micke and Steve Alba's mom said that
Ciba Geigy (pronounced Cho bánh Ghê
Ghé) recently did an interview with her
oldest (Steve) for THRASHER. News to
us, but it's reasonably safe to say, "Look
for an upcoming Salba interview.
Local Notes...Sporticus, a member of
Jaks Team (out of S.F.), was skating
(flailing) down Market Street one day when
he accidentally/on purpose flailed a man
and maybe more. This is really nothin' new
since Sport isn't yet one of the better
skaters, and tends to flail upon unsuspect-
ing folk probably more often than not. But
the flailed-on man was not about to be left.
a victim. Coming upon an intersection,
Sport was waiting for the green go-ahead
when from behind he was viciously
attacked by the victim, who apparently had
snapped and "wasn't gonna take it
anymore from you punks," (whether he
meant kid-type punks or "punk-rock" type
punks may have been a determining
factor). Our "victim" proceeded to pull a
noticeably large chunk of Sport's hair out
of his head while furiously punching the
stunned boy around. The melee was
broken up by plainsclothes police who
were in the vicinity at the time. To say the
least, a shaken Sport came out of if okay.
but is still missin' that chunk of hair (which
happened to be long).
A farewell party was given in honor of
Bob Denike in Los Gatos in early De-
cember. He is off to an institution of higher
learning come January. Los Olvidados,
and The Faction, (Steve Caballero's
band), a keg of beer, plenty of hospitality,
Becker and the crew, plus a few notable
personas made the party a hit. Best of luck
to you, Bob.
WEST GERMANY...A tight group of skaters
are repairing their neighborhood halfpipe
ramp. A rich entrepreneur drives by in a
Mercedes Benz and spots the situation. He
stops his car to find out what the skaters
are doing. They tell him they are fixing their
skateboard ramp (something which he has
never seen nor heard of). The boyz enjoy his
surprised interest and turn him on to a quick
demo. The man is so blown away that he
asks the skaters to design a ramp for his
roller-ice skating rink in town. The boyz
agree and within a month the Tropicana
Roller Center has a burning hot halfpipe.

TRICK TIP
FAKIE HANDPLANT
Stacy Peralta with Tony Hawk

Grab this board as if you are going to do a
normal handplant.
1. To learn this trick start off by going half
way up the wall and doing little fakie
handplant pull-aways, almost like little
"bunny hops. This will give you the
approximate feeling of the move.
ON BOARD

3
2. As you begin, make sure that your plant
hand is to one side of the board.
Remember, in a regular handplant, you
do an arc but in this fakie version,
you're doing a straight up and down,
seesaw type move.
3. When you start getting out, make sure
that you stay centered directly over (or
under, as by now you are upside down)
the board with a bent knee, low center
of gravity stance. The board should
always remain right underneath you.
4. Your head shouldn't turn like it does
during a normal invert. You should
always be looking at the pool wall. So,
esentially, you drop in backwards.
5. When coming back into the pool, be
tightly tucked to avoid hanging up...just
study the pictures.
6. Keep trying the trick farther and farther
up the wall, compressing more and
more as you "get higher."
