As a last resort against oncoming skate masses, a certain skater's mom's
somewhat futile plea can still be seen here (behind Steve Rocco) only days
after fleeing to New Jersey.
From top left is a promotional album for Roller Derby Skateboards" "Sidewalk
Surfing" by The Good Guys, circa 1964, "Skateboardin' USA" by Sneakers
& Lace in 1976 (inside is a photo of Stacy Peralta with hair past his
shoulders). In 1979, jazz musician Joe Farrell (accompanied by Chick
Corea) did the album "Skateboard Park." Keith Meek is sitting by Joes' right
foot. The present 1982 album cover is Code of Honors' "Fight or Die." Quite
a transition in attitude.

socks and Dart Dodgers punk? I suppose it
can be argued that the mag is a reflection of
its readership. Conversely, I know a lot of
people who skate who aren't exactly
punks. Remember, there is no truth, it's all
interpretation. The reason that
THRASHER is so punk is, (choose one): A)
punk is in the eye of the beholder, B) the
staff is comprised of studded leather fetish
bondage boys, C) people don't send in
enough alternative viewpoints, D) contem-
porary youth is disenchanted with standard
traditional viewpoints.
How about the big one always asked by
so-called straight types. Terms like "skate
nazi" and "skate and destroy" seem to
arouse images of rampant destruction and
social "irresponsibility." How about it, is it
really true that all skaters are on drugs?
Talk about stupid questions, in the sixties
drugs were ostensibly taken for enlighten-
ment, now the same people take drugs to
forget what they've learned. What are
drugs anyway? Alcohol is the number one
drug killer in Amerika and it seems that the
ones who pose the skate/drug question in-
variably are two steps away from the
cocktail lounge. Pass the Geritol and the
Lucky Strikes gang, 'cause here goes. (To
further keep those librarians fat, paranoid,
and happy, the obligatory teenage sex and
denial music exposés will follow). Drug
abuse in skateboarding is, (choose one):
A) roughly paralleled to the rest of society,
B) standard issue, C)what do you think this
is, the fucking NFL? D) not worth talking
about, E) pass the joints.
Aspiring manufacturing moguls all want
to know, "is it possible to purchase editorial
coverage"? What is this "I'm in with the
crowd time," and everything has its price?
To find out if it was true I contacted several

score some quality equipment. My first
contact, Jerry Madrid, promised to send me
a long deck which never came. Big Dick
Novak refused to flow a travel bag until I
"settled up on my debt." That's cool Mr.
Dick except you owe me. I called Larry
G&S and couldn't get past the switchboard.
After striking out with the leading truck
companies, I even tried some roller outfit in
Chicago. Tom Sims returned my call, col-
lect. Powell presented me with a bill for a
broken Xerox machine, (Jay Smith did it,
not me; I am a victim of quality association),
so forth and so on. Finally I contacted
Potato Head, who always has a good stash
of equipment, he told me to try Cash
McAnlis at Hobie. Of course, he neglected
to mention they'd ceased operations sev-
eral eons ago. In summation, I'd have to
say my effort at media power brokerage
was a washout, but maybe you can do bet-
ter. If you want to try just use my name; try
Jerry first, 'cause maybe he'll send you my
deck. This sordid tale proves, (choose
one): A) the Amerikan dream really works,
B) flunkies have no prestige, C) skaters are
basically honest, D) you get what you pay
for, E) if you want a favor don't call collect.
I've saved the most insulting ones for
last, why do you pick such shitty photos?
Well, who says they stink? Just to prove my
point, consider the accompanying photo of
the tatooed biker. Just why is this socio-
documentarian non-skate photo in
THRASHER, anyhow? (choose one): A) to
take up space, B) he's the brother of a fam-
ous skater, C) he won the 1978 Signal Hill
Downhill, D) it's an obvious attempt to build
up that hardcore street image, E) he is our
publisher, Ed Riggins.
Welcome to the club. Anyone else, any-
place else, how about a couple of parting
shots for the censorship board? So, how
about contests? Win or lose, choose or
don't. So why do I write such shitty articles,
anyway? (choose one): A) for the money,
B) they are the works of a primitive mutant,
C) I don't, they are written by college stu-
dents, D) you really can't classify this as
writing, E) because I care about the future
of the sport?
