ASH
April cover boy Street Scott reportedly
has a quarter-pipe ramp set up in his
lower Nob Hill, S.F. flat. Word has it that
early practice sessions on the indoor
structure, which was scammed from a
local construction site, saw SS's board
flying through his bedroom window, 10
stories to the street below. Speaking of
S.F., inner-city, urban ramp construction
is stepping up in Fogtown.
Skate Guru and former four-wheeled
soothsayer Curtis Hesselgrave has tied
the holy knot of matrimony at a private
ceremony in North County, San Diego,
skate sources Wally (Tom) Inouye and
Chris Strople report.
Superstar dept., Per Welinder sat next
to fellow Super Swede, Bjorn Borg, on the
flight from N.Y.C. to CA. just after
Eurocana Summer Camp. Although
racket man Borg was picked up in a 30
foot Limo upon arrival, top freestyler Per
wasn't disappointed and commented, "At
least Stacy has a Volvo."
Per managed to see quite a bit of the
wild west while he was visiting California.
Some of the highlights included crowds of
200 people applauding his routines at
famous S.F. tourist trap, Pier 39. But the
best part came during his stay in San Jose
with Steve Caballero and the locals. It
seems that everybody went to see the
DOA/Los Olvidados show, where upon the
20 year old Per immediately captured the
attentions of more than one lass in the
auditorium and disappeared for several
days. Per's comment, "It was nice."
In Silicon Valley, Fly and Kiwi (alias
Robert Schlaefi and Peter Gifford) have
been doing some entertaining lately at
their fashionable south Bay Area digs.
Early reports have them pulling the plug on
their bakyard pool (over heavy objections
from Peter's girlfriend) immediately
attracting the attentions of the Nor-Cal
Skate populace, including some heavy
skate pioneers like Blackhart, Bryan
Buck, and Scott Parsons. Look for a "pool
party exposé in upcoming issues.
Practice sessions for the up and coming
downhill events is proceeding at a feverish
pace, at times improving your speed factor
proves to be extremely hazardous
business. Santa Cruz downhill ace Bob
Denike acquired a broken arm during a
bearing testing session at a secret code
408 spot.
Lowboy has been spotted a numerous
flatland environs with a camera in hand
and a recorder in tow busily gathering info
for THRASHER's upcoming freestyle
symposium.
Talking Freestyle...Steve Rocco will
make a return to the competitive wars, it
seems that brother Anthony now claims to
be Roccoland's numero uno.
Back to reality, Larry at Tracker has
found a way to cope with North County's
intense summer heat, our roving reporter
spotted the old boy sipping Cuba Libres in
the comfort of his a/c office.
Travel Log...Mofo is at this very
moment spreading chaos in Canada. R.
Mullen is, (what else) practicing in Cal. for
the Del Mar R.H.S. final. The Swedish
wrecking crew (Per & Per) are also
returning for the Del Mar showdown. Keith
Butterfield has also flown to Canada to
compete in the Canadian Open. Our roving
photoman, Glen E. Friedman, has been
setting world mileage records as he criss
crosses the country covering gigs and
uncovering Thrashers.
Immediately after replying and fiberglas-
sing his backyard ramp and then holding a
local contest on the bio structure, Steve
Caballero jetted to Spain to meet up with
fellow travelmate Mike McGill. Purpose: to
co-star in a feature length film called
"California Cowboys." It seems that the
movie, which stars Jimmy McNichol,
John Ethan Wayne, (yes, he is) and
Timothy Van Patten, will feature
skateboarding in its theme which writer
Len Wechsler hopes will be the most
intense skateboarding footage ever
recorded on film. Stacy Peralta, the
skating actor, will be on location later this
month and the film, which is being directed
by Gordon Hessler, should see an early
spring release, if not sooner.

THE IMPOSSIBLE2
As described by Stacy Peralta
1 Grab the nose with the left foot firmly
in place on the tail, your right arm
out for leverage.
2 Lift the body and the board directly up,
lift and compress right knee into chest.
in a jump motion.
3 Get the nose under your right foot,
scoop the board in and arc with your
left foot. The syncronization of both
feet is one of the main keys in catching
the board and carrying it through its
4 Now that the board is airborne and you
have let go of it, catch it upside down
with your left foot and then come down
with your right foot onto the nose for
the braced catch. As your dropping
down the board, the right leg is
favored, don't let the left foot touch the
ground, shift weight to the right.
567 You're now in position for the next
and final arc. The right leg holds nose
firmly down, while the left leg and foot
whip the board around. The right foot
doesn't move as much, it basically
stays within a 12-inch range waiting for
the board to come around. When the
left foot has pushed it into the arc, it
slides easily back over the top of the
board. As the left foot is landing on the
board, the right foot waits for the board
to come down before effortlessly
getting back onto it.
A good way to learn this trick is to start
with sequence position 5 and learn that
part of the trick. Once you have that, just
add the first step. This is a mind-blowing
trick and a real good one to add to any
freestylers collection.
