            NOTES
from the underground
WRIGHT KIDS, IT'S ROCKIN' TIME!" - ROB TYNER,
dope this month in the seven inch format; let's start with The Flakes.
Russel Quan is a 100 percent garage rock machine. Don't know how he
manages to find the time for all the bands he beats the drums for, but one
thing they all usually have in common is their lo-fi/hi-quality. "Bip Bam
Boom!" is the title to watch for, on Just Add Water Records... The
..cars,

women
Exploders have got a carnally-charged Rip Off sound to them, fitting
because their one-sided, two song, carnally-charged seven inch is on the
carnally-charged Rip Off label. Look for "Electric Power" to charge your-
self, carnally... Not departing too far from their early ancestors such as
Discharge, Haymaker cranks out some pretty
ferocious hardcore on the usual subjects (guns
rule, people and god suck) but also have a song
about skateboarding ("Skate Like Shit")...
Whoa, Canadian skate rock! Beyond
Possession lives! Twelve songs on one
seven inch make statements about quan-
tity versus quality come to mind, but this
shit rips... On the weird and dreary tip
comes The Lost Sounds. Now this one
is truly hard to peg. The a-
side is kinda introspec-
tive, dark, brooding stuff,
but the b-side is where the
action picks up. The vocalist starts in like the singer from Sacrilege (the
British Sacrilege) over some real noisy stuff that is sure to give mom and
dad a complete fucking headache. Yessss! Mission accomplished! Then
the third track kicks in and fucking rocks. Yep, it's a screwball from
Tennessee (The Oblivians neck of the woods, y'know) but killer. It's
called "1+1=Nothing" and it's on fabulous eMpTy Records... On the live
front, just saw a band called Tuuli from somewhere in the Great White
North; Toronto it must have been. Three young, cute, pixie-ish waifs (and
one, uh, elfish guy on drums?) rockin' out pretty hard. It was a fun show
to watch if you can get over the just-past-teenage style (obnoxious plat-
form shoes, skirt over pants, what?) and the in-between song banter. Still,
my guess is that these kids will be on MTV in no time (or at least Much
Music-ugh)... And speaking of righteous rock, JJ Nobody and the
Regulars have put out an LP that is very much geared to cars, booze,
and rock.dk
Tuuli
women and rock, some of my favorite things. Check out Rock 'n' Roll
Doesn't End at 2:00 on Hopeless... My favorite record of this month's batch
is gonna have to be The Hives' a.k.a. I-D-I-O-T on Gearhead Records. Yep,
another Swedish band. These guys have a seriously spazzy punk sound
going, that just plain smokes, and do a real garagey cover of the Addicts
song "Numbers" that fucking rules. Unfortunately it's only six songs, but do
yourself a favor, quit playing your stupid video game, or surfing the net, or
quit looking retrospective and moody over your cup of coffee or whatever
and do yourself a favor and go buy this slab o' wax! --Wez Lundry
STEVE WRIGHT PLAYS AN SG AND SERVES PRESS DUTY
The Sick was formed in 1996 and our first gig was in
December of that year. It was me and Warner, our bass player. I'd played in a
couple bands previously and we just weren't really satisfied with anything we
were doing, so we got back together and started The Sick-recruited some
local people to play.
No we're not straight
edge, although we do believe there's more to life than drinking beer and
smokin' pot.
Steroids are OK.
we like to party.
No.
Yeah man,
Well yeah, we
have a song called "Problem Drinker" on our first album that's, about not
being able to see what's going on around you when you're right in the middle
of a problem; when you can't find a solution. Some of us have had some prob-
lems with excessive partying in the past and we've taken steps to turn our lives
around. Sometimes people get that out of our lyrics and it helps them out with
their problems if they feel they need help.
Yeah, we've opened up for Snapcase, Hate Breed, H20,
Fear and DRI; Suicidal Tendencies, Bad Brains, Will Haven-the thing is the
energy. You're not going to see a band that has a more energetic frontman
than us, anywhere. Pretty much hands down, our fans walk away saying, "Fuck, their singer's
insane." We don't ever play shows where there's not a gnarly pit-there's always a pit. But
we also don't have a lot of fights at our shows. Tony, the singer, talks about it, "We're here
to have fun. We're not here to kill each other." He always talks about our strength is through
our diversity. So everyone looks around the room and sees people that don't look like them
and realizes that's what makes us seem so strong-everyone isn't a clone of each other. We
realize we are different from each other and we embrace that.
He did. I was
listening to Howard Stern this morning and 'ole Hank was on. He's down for the
cause. This girl who was managing us at the time was friends with him and the first
mix on our album was totally shot. She sent him a tape, he listened to it and he liked
it. He agreed to come up and remix it for us at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley for free.
He flew up here and spent two or three days in the studio with us, like 12-hour-days
just rehashing everything. He even got in there and sang backup tracks on one of the
songs. He would say "No man, you gotta do it like this." We were like, "You do it then."
The guy is so funny and nice you wouldn't believe it. He just had us laughin' the whole
time. He had papers of notes just from listening of everything he wanted to do. He
dedicated himself to this project for the love of the music, which was totally cool. We
still haven't played with him but it might happen someday.. -Eben Sterling
