COMPETITION SITS IN AN ODD NICHE.
Can skateboarding be judged? Does anybody
care? Some skaters seem to approach contests
determined to succeed, while others wonder why
the fuck they aren't out skating street. Instead,
they need to feel awkward performing for an audience.
Skating is about progression, hanging with your bros, push-
ing each other in games of S-K-A-T-E... Unless cash is your
motivation, contests should be taken with a grain of salt.
However, these events are good times to see friends, to
party, and watch dudes bust. Tampa is as good as they get,
run by skaters and attended by skaters with a smaller
paparazzi than foreign comps.
Tampa Pro 2001 took place March 15-18, iced by the
event's final act. Enter the "Loop of Death," a test of balls
and pushing the limits. It wasn't about the money, despite
there being a grand for the first three to pull the loop.
This was about stepping up. Al Partanen busted it, Peter
Hewitt busted it, and a drunk Aussie named Jake Brown
"Dude, did you see that?"
