O YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST
Thrasher you ever: saw?
How about we start from the end and go to
the beginning?
OK. What's the most memorable thing you
ever saw in Thrasher?
I just remember Thrasher, and the motto
"Skate and Destroy," and the lettering. I used
to write that all over my stuff at school; I
really loved that lettering.
Thrasher was more about just skating.
Do you think they've basically kept the same
format all these years?
It's definitely gotten a lot better. It's always
been about skating. It's been a real barometer
of the pulse of skating.
Do you think Thrasher is still important?
More so than ever.
How many times have you been on the cover?
Three times.
What year was the first?
The first was when Dogtown first moved
up to San Francisco, and I got on Dogtown..
Jim was working with Fausto and all the
guys at Thrasher; they were backing him up
and helping him out. And I was their new
guy, so they wanted to get me going and help
Jim. They set up this photo shoot in LA, with
Kevin Ancell and some other people. It was
THEY PRETTY MUCH
SAVED SKATEBOARDING"
Yeah. It wasn't so much images that
you saw, it was just the whole feeling it.
conjured up. That's what I remember
more than actual photographs.
Can you believe it's been 20 years?
That Thrasher's been around? Yeah, it's
fucking insane. There were no maga-
zines when Thrasher started out. They
started Indy and then Thrasher to get
skating going again. They pretty much
saved skateboarding.
