lip tricks, fastplants, big liens, and frontside airs. Chris
Gentry frontside blunted and tailslid from the ten-foot to
the seven-foot bowl. Rueler's trucks touched every inch of
the 105.5 blocks of coping that surround the pool with
frontside 50-50s, not to mention lien disasters and transfers.
over the hips.
Omar Hassan and Salba were the two battling for first and
second places. Omar rode with authority, and you could tell
he had been there before. Big airs of all kinds, airwalk to
fakie, madonnas, 5-0s to tailslide, tailslides in over the box,
alley-oops over hips, and ollie lipslides up the roll-in and
through the shallow end got Omar a very respectful second
place. First place went to Screaming Lord Salba, who has
clocked in over 20-odd years of consistently riding round-
wall and shows it. Salba ruled the pool with a wide variety
of lines and tricks combined. He is a master of staying in
the deep end for five walls, making it back to the other
bowls and back to the deep. Andrechts, slob airs, frontside
airs to tail, grind reverts, frontside disasters, backside airs,
boardslides, nosegrinds over the box, and airs over the hips
gave him the edge over Omar.
A great deal all together. Thanks to Greg Basic, Dave
Duncan (the master of ceremonies) for keeping the event
under control, Mike Crum for being the drunkest and the
most out of control, and all the sponsors. See you next year
at the Grind Series 2001. Chris Rooney

HE FIFTH ANNUAL BASIC BBQ GRIND SERIES ONCE
again went down in Huntington Beach, California, with a con-
test atmosphere unlike any other, on a steamy sunny Southern
California afternoon. To sum it up, it is a perfect excuse to drink
endless amounts of free beer, stuff free burgers down your
neck, and witness some of the best skating going down, all in
one place.
There seem to be more spectators every year, with the
clover bowl being completely surrounded by
roundwall fanatics and tons of tattooed
staggering girls. Some of the more
noticeable attendees were Jeff

year but was
unable to participate due to a recent broken arm), John Lucero,
Malba, Jinx, Jim Gray, Tyco, John Swope, and Remy Stratton.
Giving a play by play of all the skaters and their runs would be
impossible (plan a trip next year). The contest was broken down
into two heats; each heat had 45 minutes of jam-style skating, and
then the top eight went to the finals, which consisted of a 30-
minute jam. Here's an idea of what went down.
Matt Moffett, coming off an injury to his guts, skated fast as
usual and threw down lipslides, Smith grinds, and huge frontside
airs. Brewce Martin showed up from Skatopia with reckless
abandon runs: you name it to revert and Andrechts on an ol
Alva eight-inch. Ricky Stiles threw up all kinds of invert varia
tions, seven-block stand-up grinds to laybacks over the box, and
backside Smith grinds. Mike Smith laid back grinds, Smith-
verted, boardslid, backside disastered, and threw up some ollies
