WIN RIGHT
N THE FIRST CONTEST THAT CAN TRULY BE JUDGED
(at least since the glory days of barrel jumping), Bristol, England's
Danny Wainwright bested Reese "The Forbinator" Forbes
in the latter's $10,000 high-ollie challenge.
By clearing 44 and 1/2 inches, a height
just above line judge Professor Schmitt's
ample stomach, Danny will be entered into
the Guinness Book of World Records, just
before those fat motorcycle riding twins,
and right next to Danny Way's recent ver-
tical high air mark. Forbes and Wainwright
slugged it out to the bitter end, but
Stacy Lowery, Brian Young, Rob
Gonzalez, and Jake Stewart also popped
into the finals by clearing 39 inches the day
prior. Sadly, Kien "Donger" Lieu was
eliminated at 37 inches, and Matt
Hensley, the former high ollie champ
(whose 38-inch record was set in '89), was
content to watch from the sidelines.

In a case of inter-distributor incest,
Brad Staba has left Foundation to sign up at
Toy Machine with Skater Of The Year and best
pal Brian Anderson. The two also had plans
to live together behind the world famous Palace
Steak House sign in SF's Mission District until
their rent reached astronomical proportions.
Wherever they go, Anderson will undoubtedly
have plenty of clothes to put in his new closet,
thanks to his recent arrival on the Fourstar
apparel team.
To try and plug the hole, Swank and Beagle
have added the able shiftying abilities of
Justin "Captain" Strubing to the Foundation
squad. Strubing's former sponsor, Adrenalin, is
said to have regrouped under the Chapman
roof, with the proud return of original Adrenalin
rider Chris Senn.
Über-bro J. Strickland is no longer official
team manager at Birdhouse, leaving him more
time to hit the train yards, fat caps blasting.
Regardless of official titles, he and the Drunx
are reportedly tight as ever.
After stumping visiting pros for the last sev-
eral years (Steve Olson grinded half of it
in the Shorty's flick), Boulder, Colorado's
infamous S-Rail was finally laid to rest with
a 50-50 by local ripper Uriel Luebke.

Despite being the first to survive the dreaded
San Dieguito double-set, Duffs sent.
Chris Lambert packing, along with Dune and
Alphonzo Rawls. Taking up the slack, how-
ever, is new rider Jesse Paez.
Daniel Shimizu has joined the pirate ship
Innes, while Toebee Parkhurst was told to
walk the plank.
Ed Templeton has taken on team manage-
ment duties for the skate end of the Rusty team,
adding Arto Saari and himself to the roster in
the process..
Fourteen-year-old Tosh Townsend, another
Rusty rider, made a big impression at the Tampa
Am contest, but an even bigger one on the raw
streets after tailsliding the monster 14-stair track
school rail in LA and then kickflipping
the stairs. Tosh is being supplied
by Element.

The Marseille-like curves of San Diego's new
Ocean Beach skatepark are set to be ready for
ripping on February 19. The full pads and $30
membership required are a bummer, but may
serve as a blessing in disguise, as they likely will
deter Ocean Beach's stiflingly large shitbag and
longboarder population.

HOT GUNS
Dan Ehara won vert and Colt Cannon street
at the Vans Amateur World Championships the
other day in Ontario, CA. They both have the
option of turning pro for Vans. Talk continues
to circulate about outside corporation types
stepping in to skating and upping the ante. It is
worthy of note that while outsiders make
claims, a company like Vans, which has been
around skating since 1966, has promised to
award over two million dollars this year in prize
money for their respective Triple Crown events.
Rumors of Kareem Campbell starting his

Keith Cochrane is seemingly haunted by the
latest in a series of bizarre holiday mishaps. In
his most recent legal holiday horror, Keith acci-
dentally ran over his dog. The distraught owner
of Think has immersed himself in work in the
aftermath of the tragedy, choosing to attend the
ASR trade show in Long Beach, CA, the ISPO
exhibition in Germany, and a Las Vegas event
all in the span of one week. Friends were ini-
tially alarmed by Cochrane's depression, but
found hope when he refused to return an old
skate contest trophy won by Jake Phelps. They
felt that Keith's persistence in holding the tro-
phy hostage indicated that the bereaved one's
life was returning to normal.

"What rhymes with intoxication?" This dia-

odd notion, Pus asked what
I was up. Gonzales replied
that he was on his way to
New York to open a show
of his own artwork at the
Alleged Gallery and so he
needed a Gibson deck. Of
course! Pushead still claims
to be trying to make sense
out of this statement. As
for Gonz, one of his giant
sculptures was sold to a museum in the
Netherlands for $25,000. Also at the NY open-
ing were the Rookie crew, Haze, the Zoo.

and Jocko Weyland.

"I'm only interested in backyard pools."
-Matt Neely, 3.2.70-12.31.99
SLA
I first met Matt Neely at the Red Onion pool in
El Sobrante in 1989. He was rolling with Royce
Nelson. It's funny, because they were from Marin,
and Royce looked
like a baseball jock
and Neely looked
like a tennis player.
Truth is, though,
they both straight
up killed it in pools.
I learned a lot from
the both of them
back then, espe-
cially about skating
shallow ends.
Then, as now,
both pools and pool skaters were relatively scarce
in our area, so we became familiar. Probably 60 or
70% of the pool sessions I've done in the past ten
years have included Neely. In 1990 he and Bill
Hanley came over from Marin and located and
drained most of the pools left in the wake of the
East Bay firestorm. This included the Blackbottom
and, I think, the perfect square where he scored the
cover of Slap-backside microedger, arguably one
of the best covers ever.
His long runs were consistently engaging. He
delivered the old standbys-the shallow end back-
sides, the deep end frontsides, the hands-behind-
the-back corner carves at speed-with one of the
cleanest, most efficient styles in pool skating. In his
hands even that crustiest of old school maneuvers,
the backside layback rollout, seemed light-footed
and graceful. He never wore pads. Matt Neely
loved skating pools with an emotional depth he
generously shared with the rest of us. That's why
I loved him and that's why I'll miss him.
