NO LOVE
This last weekend I was hit by a
revelation. A girl I know gave me
the classic line "Let's just be
friends." At first it came as a
shock, but I just had myself a cou-
ple more beers and
realized,
needs
who
girls?
Have they ever
actually done.
anything

for
me? Hell
no; they've
only broken.
my heart and I
館
don't need 'em. She needs people
like me more than I need people
like her. And you know why?
Because I have my one true love,
who doesn't care if I call every
night or if I skate too much.
Skateboarding is my one true love,
and I don't care if anyone likes it
or not; it's what I want. So why
should I even care if she doesn't
like it? To anyone out there who
might get into this kind of situa-
tion with your boyfriend or girl-
friend, just laugh in their face, grab
your board, and go nuts. Show
everyone what's up and hit those
crazy gaps/tricks you've always
been scared of, 'cause you're
gonna realize you don't need to
give a shit. You might even find
skating is more important to you
than you ever thought. Rock on.
BACK SLIDER
some
Lost in Thought
Lexington, KY
I have been skating for quite
time now. Like most
skaters, I've taken on a favorite
trick: the good old fashioned
backside tailslide. I don't care if
you do it regular or switch, kick-
flip, shuvit, heelflip, nollie, or
fakie ollie into or out of it, just as
long as at some point in the trick
you're skidding along backwards
on your tail. I know it sounds a
bit foolish to fuss over a trick this
much, but this is skating and I
Ilove it. I love the way backside
tailslides feel, look, and sound.
Let's go over some memorable
moments in what I call the popu-
lar history of the slide, starting
with Jason Lee's kickflip back-
side tailslide in Video Days. It still
appears regularly in modern.

outstanding clips. are Eric
Koston's switch backside tail-
slide down that long ledge in
Girl's Goldfish video, Jeremy
Wray's BS tailslide down Hubba
a few years ago, all of Peter
Smolik's variations, Cairo
Foster's giant one in his Thrasher
interview, and then the footage
that finally prompted me to write
this: Diego Bucchieri's freaking
Kickflip backside tailslide down
Hubba, and Tommy Budjanec's
BSTS down a round, nine-stair
handrail. When I saw those pic-
tures I was taken aback. I just sat
and stared for a few minutes,
going over in my mind what it
would be like to commit to, and
land, tricks like those. It's hard
for me to fathom. On a good
day, I can get one onto a con-
servative ledge and skid it a
little bit before I plop off fakie.
Every once in while I can
bring them out straight, and for
giggles I'll kickflip into them
on a curb-size ledge. I've even
tried them switch on tiny
curbs, where my wheels just
clear the ground, but to take it
to that level is absolutely
amazing. Obviously I've left out
a number of accomplished
skaters who have landed amazing
stuff; these are just ones that
stick out the most for me. Thank
god for skateboarding.
