get to the bottom of it. It's ridiculous
for a magazine that supports skate-
boarding to refuse to print an ad for a
certain skateboard company. I'll open
up a Transworld and they have
Toy/Zero ads. It's ridiculous for me to
pay for a magazine and not see my fa-
vorite skateboarders in the ads. It was
good to see Elissa in an Etnies ad (con-
grats on your shoe!) but it would be
twice as good seeing a Toy ad as well.
It's hard to subscribe to a magazine,
but it would be 100% worthwhile to
see Toy/Zero
ads. I have 100%
respect for Ed
Templeton and
Jamie Thomas
and all of their
riders. I'd like to
see them in a
magazine I'm subscribing to with my
own money.

I was wondering what the deal is
with Tom Penny. I was watching old
skate videos of him and I don't really
understand what's going on. Most
pros seem to do tricks down huge.
gaps like they're proving something,
but he just can bust tricks first try like
they're nothing. Then you see the
look on his face, and you get the im-
pression
he couldn't care less.
And I read all these articles that say
he's just burnt out on the professional
scene, but I don't really get what that
means. He doesn't like the attitude or
he just wants to chill and skate for
fun, or what? It also seems like skaters
are trying to imitate his style. I agree
that Andrew Reynolds is one of the
best pros, but when I watch The End,
it gives me an Etnies High Five flash-
back. He does all the same tricks, he
has his hair cut like Penny's old hair,
and then in his SOTY interview it
sounds like he's talking shit about
him, saying "No comment" to the
question about making Penny seek
exile in Europe because Andrew stole
his kickflip. I remember back in '95,
Penny tore up Radlands, busting the
same shit that Reynolds does now,
and Reynolds did the lamest tricks,
like fakie kickflips on flatground. The
thing I noticed
8 was that when
anyone tries to
get a piece of
Penny's style,
they just look
bad. I don't
care what you
can nollie 360', 'cause you can't do it
with ease and style, and land like you
didn't even do anything, and look up
like you're so stoned you can't see,
and give the overall impression of
pure skateboarding for fun. He's not
really even skateboarding; it's just
self-expression, like the shit I used
to feel when I first started skating.
The feeling of oneness, like you're
skateboarding for yourself, that late-
night session feeling. Back to Tom
Penny-has he ever had a full video
part besides TSA and Etnies? All I
know is when you see a guy like Tom
Penny skate, it just pushes you to
skate, like an inspiration, or maybe
this letter is the reason he's so down
on the skate scene. Either way, I re-
ally couldn't care less about any other
pro skaters.
