NIGHT BREED
As the night falls and the city
stops breathing, the sounds of
thundering wheels and racing
hearts fill the air. Packs of wild
dogs congregate to roam the
streets in search of prey. We ride
fast and mark our territory with
forceful and fluid expres-
sions, steadily feeding off
each other while domi-
nating everything in our
path. Sounds of grind-
ing and slashing paint
the canvas of the night.
The blood we sacrifice
on these hard city blocks is
little to pay compared
to the divine anima-
tion brought into our
lives. For we are the
conveyors of a
screaming subculture.

passed, though, I watched count-
less little skate punks thrashin'
around, and inside I was hurting.
Every time I heard a tail hit the
pavement, I wanted to grab my
dusty old friend and join in. Last
year I finally graduated from music
school, and I got a job with the
Wichita Symphony. I also got mar-
ried, and my wife and I have an
eleven-month-old daughter, but
there was still something missing.
Earlier this year I began to realize
what it was. Skating! It wasn't just
part of my youth, but it was who I
was while I was growing up. Hell,
THRASHER
I just had to drop a note to let the
world know how exciting skate-
boarding really is. I should know.
Back around 1990, I put away my
board and tore down my ramp.
Why? Well, I was beginning to re-
alize at the time that I wanted to
make a career out of playing the
bass in a symphony orchestra. The
problem with skating is that it's
rough on the hands, which are my
livelihood. If I ever wanted to
make it in the cutthroat classical
music industry, I couldn't endanger
my hands by slamming all the time.
So, skating kind of faded away, and
before long I was off to music

EASE
I'd been skating for
about ten years before
I put it aside. It was all
I ever did. The last
thing I wanted to hap-
pen was to realize at
thirty that I'd forgot-
ten how to have fun.
Well, last week I got
another stick. The
boards have changed a lot, and
my legs were a bit wobbly, but it
doesn't matter. I can still do slappy
grinds, and I've still got a mean.
ollie. What else do I need? So, a
message to all you folks who think
maybe you're outgrowing your
stick: THINK TWICE!
Before you know it, ten
years will be gone, and
you'll be kicking yourself
in the ass. As for my pre-
cious hands, Beethoven
is dead...I'm not.
