I'm writing concerning any and
all parents who may be question-
ing the decency of the content of
Thrasher magazine and are con-
templating whether or not to adopt
restrictive practices regarding its
exposure among your dependents.
You need to clear your fascist little
minds and get your priorities
straight. I find a stunning paradox
between the standard expectations
parents have for their children and
what they allow them to read.
Most guardians want their kids to
grow up and be elitists. Parents
stress highly their kids' educa-
tion, and attempt to focus their
entire childhood on it. Today the
norm seems to be to teach kids
honesty, open-mindedness, and
tolerance. So what seems so odd
to me is that these parents have
no problem with Seventeen, Bop,
or Teen People, yet find Thrasher
to be an utmost evil. Thrasher, if
you look beyond the mild crude-
ness, is a wealth of intellectual
elitism. It supports the arts in its
Canvas section, it supports cre-
ative literature with Mark
Gonzales' short stories, and its
format is clever, wry, and humor-
ous. It is open to an exchange of
opinions in Mail Drop. It doesn't
deny kids their feelings of youthful
rebellion-in fact, it inspires a
questioning attitude among the
youths who read it, including
myself, of society and its flaws-
and does all this and much more.
on the backdrop a wonderfully
creative sport: skateboarding. This
is the evil you so utterly detest and
attempt to deny your kids access
to. The crap you let them read,
however, is much worse. These
beauty/fashion/social magazines
are black holes of shallowness.
They promote only social life
(don't get me wrong, I realize the
importance of social interaction:
however, I feel that these publica-
tions glorify it in a negative way)

and all things superficial. They
teach youths to discriminate based
on physical appearance (beauty).
Instead of any intellectual idea
exchange, they have make-up tips,
how to get a date, and the top-ten
teen Hollywood heartthrobs.
These magazines are stinkpots of
capitalistic motivation. They leech
off our temptations as consumers,
and not as thinking human beings.
They are published by marketing
wizards, not by anyone who really
cares about their content, which

denies them any sort of real
integrity. If any parents read this,
remember this when you break lit-
tle Tommy's heart telling him he
can't read his Thrasher. It's a
mediocre world out there. Do you
want to perpetuate it, or take
advantage of any ray of hope
attainable? Thrasher, in its cor-
rect interpretation, embraces
and encourages these hopes,
and you're ever so quick to see it
to the incinerator. This is a con-
spiracy, isn't it?
