A
COUPLE OF PRETTY FANTASTIC live shows have
been going down lately. Last weekend a local
bar sponsored a "Trash Fest," and although
the first night was made up of bands that pretty much
blow, the second night was rather amazing. The Adz
went on and played some loud punk, followed by
The Leaving Trains. Falling James, who fronted the
band wearing a dress and was seen smoking a mari-
juana cigarette in the van outside, rocked out with the
rest of the band in heathen abandon. Next up was the

legendary Deniz Tek. Perhaps I need to do some
explaining...ever hear of Radio Birdman? Tek was a
member of the mid-'70s Australia/Detroit power
combo, and has taken a new act on the road. While it
was really good, the band was only a three-piece and
Jacked
lacked the punch of Birdman. A couple Birdman cov-
ers later and I ended the night a puking mess.
Success! Perhaps the strangest show I have wit-
nessed in long time was the following night. It
seems that Camel cigarettes flew The
Supersuckers down to Phoenix to play a show for
har staff only
to the public. The place was
freaky; all kinds of guys
nonetheless. Check out their new
bar staff only, not open dressed up in suits and girls Twist Off 7" on Estrus, or any of their shit for that

you down with the Young Lion's Conspiracy? Do you
know what the fuck I'm talking about? Maybe it's
time for some education, and might I suggest it in the
form of the Fireballs of Freedom's new LP, The
New Professionals, on fabulous eMpTy records. A glo-

missed it. I should go jump off a cliff." If you did miss
it, cheer up.
You can
read their interview in an
upcoming issue of Thrasher, and you can always go
out and buy their music, take it home, put it on loud,
smoke some of that wacky-weed, and put the cover
in front of your face and shake it around. Just like the
concert! One example to check out is their recent

comparison... ..CDs are cheap to make, but this fact is
usually ignored by all, which contributes to their
higher-than-vinyl price.
However, some labels are
getting wise and releasing "samplers" or comps for
outrageously low
y low prices, and they wind up being
really good deal. You get to hear twenty or even thir-
different bands for the price of a 7" or two.

New Red Archives' At War With Society is a smoker as
well, and features some oldies (Christ on a Crutch,
Kraut, etc) and some newer bands such as The
Loudmouths, Snap-Her, and Swingin' Utters
that'll have you swingin' your fist in the air and singin'
along...
Accel 4 are a Japanese punk band that

reminds me a lot of Guitar Wolf, which isn't sur-
prising if the rumor I heard is true: Accel 4 features
his little brother. Still, while it's definitely in that vein,
it stands on its own with songs such as "Don't Stop!!
Is The Keyword." The Von Zippers are a beer-
drenched Calgarian band that revels in lo-fi but rocks

cranked out that night were geared around chasing
boys and getting loose, and that was A-OK with me.

nation. She even licked my friend Jack's neck after
the set. The only guy in the band is Russell Quon, the
drummer who used to bang the sticks in The

Mummies, and he proved that night that he can rock
without being all wrapped up in cloth. In fact, he
almost stole the show from the dames. This guy real-
ly has a good time on stage, man, standing up and
smashing away on the skins like a Chinese male ver-
sion of Sheila E on Ritalin. The Bobbyteens' LP,

Vins have
packed in the past (the Santa

I was
was kinda surprised at the emptiness of the
place. I had even left a night class early in order to
get a space in the line that I figured would be

the back alley. Instead of t that scenario, I wound up
with two hours of drinking beers in the parking lot
after casually walking up and buying my ticket at 8

ing was still there that night, though, evidenced in
the Madonna-style microphone headset that Dale
Kroker-the most badass drummer on earth-was
wearing. The Melvins played a few new songs that
night which will most likely be featured on the
album that
that they are recording as I write this.

say something about Atom and His Package in
this column. Jayson of The Grumpies turned me
on to this guy's stuff last summer and it just so
happened that Atom was playing a couple dates in

the area at the same time. I missed the first and
second shows but made it to the third, and it was

quite a treat. Atom is this nerdy guy from Philly
gimmy
who used to
to be in the hardcore band Fracture,
and his package is this little computer thingy that
he has programmed electronic songs into. He basi-
cally sings along with the little creations that the
clever package kicks out. Cover songs like the
Geto Boys' "My Mind's Playing Tricks On Me"
and The Misfits' "Where Eagles Dare" are mixed
with songs of praise for the metric system and a
yotem and a
happy birthday song for his friend Ralph, who is
disgusting. Seeing this one-man, one-computer,
show will make one giggle and feel good about
being a dork in this dork-unfriendly world. Atom
also has a couple of 7"s and CDs out, at least one
of which is on Bloodlink Records, PO Box 7414,
