re The Suicide Machines a
band on a mission? The
Michigan-based quartet,
which consists of singer
Jason Navarro, bassist Royce
Nunley, Dan Lukacinsky on
guitar, and drummer Erin
Pitman, play a familiar brand
of ska-flavored punk extracted
from luminaries like
Operation Ivy, The Clash, The
Specials, and Fishbone.
Their major label debut,
Destruction by Definition, sold
200,000 copies. While that may
be an astounding sum for a
punk band, it's chump change
for the ruling class of modern
ska. Even so, the band have
two things going for them:
Battle Hymns, a scorching new
album that features more punk
and less horns, and the brawn
of Disney (which owns the
band's record label), one of the
largest media companies on the
planet. We spoke to Navarro
and Nunley about both.
First things first, what do you think
about the new record? It's more punk
than the last one.
Royce: We really weren't happy about the
last record because we are a lot harder
live. So the new record sounds a lot
more punk.
Jason: We were definitely in a different
frame of mind though, having been on
tour for eight months out of the past year
and away from family and loved ones.

So it is kind of a homesick record called
Battle Hymns, huh?
J: That's just where the inspiration
comes from...
You guys just shot a video. What was
that like?
R: It is so bad. You sit there and lip synch
and look like you're interested for so
many hours. You have to hear the song
like 70 times in a row.
J: It is exciting for the fact that I
can't believe we've gotten this
far. But when you have done
something like this, there is no
turning back.
Do you guys feel like there is no
"turning back"? Are you catch-
ing a lot of heat?
R: Our original thing was just to
be in a band and play music and
we got lucky. But if the record
comes out and it doesn't sell,
then who cares? If we sell a
bunch of records, then hooray!
You have to be happy with
yourself and I like the record much
more than the last one. If more people
like it, then that's just a bonus.
Yet you guys have Disney in your
corner, one of the biggest media con-
glomerate giants in the world.
Coming from a do-it-yourself scene,
that must be very awkward.
R: The king of all media companies!
Fuck yeah! When we sell out, we really
sell out!
J: We are basically owned by a frozen
head. It seems that some people out on the
West coast have a problem with it, but
most people don't care. But I can't say it's
bad, because they have always treated us
really well and with a lot of respect and
have always let us do whatever we want.
They hook you guys up at the park
or what?
R: Yeah! We have gotten in for free. I
think that was the actual selling point. We
were like, "Can we get in the park for
free?" And they said, "Sure," and we were
like, "Let's do it!" -Joseph Epstein
