FROM A FRIEND THIS TIME ON THE ADVICE OF MY
GOOD FRIEND RAY, I FOUND SALVATION IN THE
FORM OF SAN DIEGO S MACH FIVE OVERDRIVE.
Jay sang for the much-lauded but underground-til-death Hoods. Chris skates ("My
ass hits the ground a lot.") and was the team manager for Gullwing until the
Christian-based company tested him for drugs. I guess having marijuana in your
system is a sin, because he was "cast out" from the company. They all listen to a
wide range of music, from blues to noise to punk and even classical. "There's a
line that goes through it all," says Hector. "There's a connection there."
The band formed about two years ago and, after some switching around, the
line-up seems to have finally cemented. They've put out a demo tape called Love
It or Leave It, a seven inch on Flapping Jet entitled Freedom, have another on the
way, and they've got the material for an LP but nobody's stepped up to put it out
yet. Unless everyone in the music industry is a complete moron, I would imagine

DYING TO KNOW
Formerly known as simply Mach Five, the band had to change their name
because some scum-sucking legal types in New York sent them a cease-and-desist
order because some bunch of pretty boys out there wanted to use the name and
had the major label clout to hire attorneys. No biggie. The real Mach Five is the
band that will knock you offa your feet like nothing you've ever seen.
Jay Wiseman, on n vocals and harp, calls the band "Maximum Rock and Blues."
He's got it dead on, the band is heavily steeped in blues. The band creates a mon-
strously sized din, but it's not noise. Rather, it's an audio assault that is compara-
ble to what the MC5 could kick out in their heyday, with as much soul as possibly
allowed by the Punk Rock Handbook.
Along with Jay are Chris Squire on bass, Xavier Anaya and Hector Penalosa on
guitars, and Anthony Spain on drums. Their roots go pretty fucking deep: Hector
played in the mighty and influential Zeros back before you were done wearing
diapers (1980, to be exact), as well as with MCM and the Monster. More recently,
it'll be out soon enough. They haven't been straying too far from home to play
shows, but they promise to in the near future. It's a show worth seeing, not only
to see the band at full bore, but they seem good at attracting a number of attrac-
tive mod-punk girls who can't help but shake it in front of the stage.
There's a revolution brewing. "We're formulating our manifesto," says Jay.
"The quest for greater volume!" adds Chris. Not into selling out for a quick buck,
it seems like they're in it for the duration. "MTV ruined it for local scenes
throughout the world now. When the Zeros played around San Diego and LA.
people didn't have a choice but to go to these clubs if they wanted to listen to
music. It was a great atmosphere, but when MTV came around, it killed it. Now
people sit around and watch music on their couch. It hasn't become a part of
the young generation," says Hector. Be the first on your block to get hip and
pick up on the revolution.
