San Pedro:
Where Old Skaters Go To Die
Why'd you choose Pedro for your
retirement?
It's a good vacationing place. Most retirees
go to Florida; I go to Pedro. It's very relax-
ing. There's only the occasional gunfire on
your street and only about one car accident
per day on your corner.
Do you see any other old pros here in
Pedro?
Yeah, Tony Hawk drives down Gaffey all the
time. But I guess he's still going for it, right?
Yeah.
I've seen Stacy Peralta doing the downhill
slide with the plastic shit on his gloves up by
Point Fermin, too.
What's worse than being an ex-pro
skateboarder?
There's nothing worse, man. You don't know
what I've been going through.
Do you want to give some shouts out?
Yeah, to Hal B'Dal, my right-hand man at
Recess Records. He gets paid to do
basically nothing.
Thanks Todd.
Clockwise from above:
Ohio hotshot Mike Hayes leads the way with a rail-loft-
ing backside 180° flip.
It takes a minimum of ten pushes to clear the fence at
7th Street-eleven if you want to backside 180°. Danny
Gonzalez pushed twelve.
Glendale Federal handrail:
Another long and low one, but not
as fiendish-looking as the library
rail. I think it's on 10th Street.
Boards & More Skate Shop
ramp: Tight, shaky and fun mini-
ramp owned by a senior citizen on
7th and Gaffey. Extra bonus of get-
ting to skate with Lonny
Hiramoto's brother and grip tape
technician, Dave.
Hills: Like 26th, most of the
streets from 17th to 32nd are all
steep and smooth, with limited
traffic. Expect flat spots.
Bands to check out:
No Comply: Rock group made up
of scary monsters. Been around
since the dawn of time. Most
famous song is a five-second num-
ber about being dead.
