POET'S CORNER
Downtown On Sundays
Skateboards
Downtown on Sundays,
Rollin', jumpin', jivin',
Having fun.
Late at night the lights glitter,
Oh, shit!
I'm late for dinner.
Mom's gonna be pissed...
But let's do this one last run
Down the 12-story parking garage.
The speed is good,
The slides are smooth,
Wheels spinnin'
And screechin'
As bodies twist and turn
With no thoughts of yesterday
And no hope for tomorrow,
Only the wind matters...
How loud you can hear it
Whistling in your ears.
Board wobblin'
Because my trucks are too loose,
On the edge of disaster
But the thrill, the speed is just
Drugging me up-high
For the punishment
I'll soon receive.
The bottom,
I made it,
Never been so happy
To reach the bottom,
Never had so much fun
Doin' it,
I just hope Mom isn't gonna be
Too eager
To reach mine.

Council outlaws 'careless' skateboarding
Ordinance allows
transportation use but
frowns on tricks
BY MICHELLE MEYERS
for The Outlook
The Gresham City Council unanimously
approved an ordinance last night that outlaws
"careless" skateboarding on city sidewalks and
property.
Under the law, skateboards, in-line skates, roller
skates, coasters and other toy vehicles and devices
can be used for transportation, but not to de
that "could be reasonably expected to endanger
persons or property."
Police Community Safety Specialist Tim
Leitner said the law stemmed from complaints
neighbors voiced about reckless skateboarders
who damage property, use profanity, litter and
make a lot of noise.
"Really the problem isn't the
skateboarding. It's the careless
behavior and the loitering."
Leitner said.
The law was passed with an
"emergency rider," putting it into
effect immediately after its pas.
sage. The maximum fine for vio-
lating the law will be $140.
Councilor Jack Gallagher said
although he often encounters
problems with nuisance skate-
boarders, he's "sorry to see a few
inconsiderate individuals caus
ing this to be enacted."
66
What did we do to
them? We're just try-
ing to live our child-
hood.
Jose Mares, a 14-year-old skateboarder, said the
sport is nothing without tricks,
"That's like dribbling a basketball but not being
able to shoot or bounce it between your legs,"
-Bob Miller,
skoleboarder
Maces said.
Bob Miller, who als
attended the city council meet
ing said the law isn't fair.
"What did we do to them
We're just trying to live our
childhood," he said.
Miller's friend Jeff Wilson
found out about the issue afte
Police Chief Bernie Giust
confronted him skateboardin
on a run down sidewalk.
99 We're just kids, what els
are we suppose to do?" b
Councilors responded that the kids can still do
their tricks at designated skate area such as the one
at Davis Park
The kids argue that they have trouble getting to
the small and crowded skateboard area.
