Notes to Contractors:
Dirt-A skateboarder with park construction
experience should be on crew to advise con-
tractor during digging and forming of the dirt
base for a skatepark. Kinks and bad transi-
tions don't always show up on blueprints. Get
the dirt right and the rest is gravy.
Build a Template - A wooden template or
scree should be built to form dirt transitions.
Especially important when shaping curved
radius transitions. Use like a compass and
swivel around a fixed center point (drain) to
form a perfect bowl.
Think Geometrically - Curves, transitions,
bevels and banks must be formed perfectly,
as drawn. Curbs, blocks, edges and corners
must be straight and crisp.
Expansion Joints/Parting Cracks - If used,
should be placed so as not to hang up a
skateboard wheel. Never place expansion
joints at the bottom of a transition unless

Cement Finish - Trowel finish the final
cement skating surface to sidewalk
smoothness. Too gritty or porous will
scrape away flesh to the bone if a skater
falls on it. Too slick and a skateboard wheel
can't hold traction.
