out of water, are the same, then how do
you expect humans, the most complicat-
ed things on earth, to be the same? I'm
glad some people had the guts to stand
up and go against the flow. Otherwise,
the world would still be flat, slaves
would still be a term 1 o one cringed at,
and all the planets would revolve around
us. I'm thankful for the people who actu-
ally had the courage to fight the sys-
tem, who held their fist high in the air
and said, "No longer will we live a lie!
No longer will we accept what we know
in our hearts is
wrong!" Those are
the people I admire,

MATT'S MOM
Please accept this
letter as notification
to cancel my son
Matthew Ferree's
subscription to your
mag. He received his
first copy, the May
issue, and we were
surprised and disap-
pointed to find it var-
ied so widely from
our family values.
李
might be worth a try.
At least our experience with
Thrasher prompted some good family
dialogue and a helpful lesson for me as a
parent. I flipped through an issue Matthew
had bought at a local skateboarding estab-
lishment before I agreed to his subscrip-
tion. I've learned I need to give more than
cursory attention next time to prevent
ordering such garbage.

HIT LIST
In the April '97 issue, it said SNFU was
voted the 5th Favorite Skate Rock Band of
All Time. Who were the rest? Oh, and by
the way, punx not dead!

ENVELOPE OF THE MONTH
ALEX PORIAU, BELGIUM
I was especially
disturbed by two
things: the vulgar lan-
guage, and the sexual content of many of
the advertisements. Both are unneces-
sary and completely inappropriate for a
magazine geared primarily to teens. The
prominent ad by Freshjive, which I con-
sider soft porn, was especially offensive.
The liberal use of profanity, including the
"f" word, was equally objectionable. I
also didn't appreciate the way letters like
this one were responded to with editorial
comments that ridiculed our values.
I wonder how much broader an audi-
ence you'd find if you cleaned up the
magazine and geared it to the millions of
kids who like skateboarding, but who
don't buy into your false image of
macho, wild-living, drug-using rebels. It

DEAD MEAT
I don't have a sub-
scription to your maga-
zine, but I want one, for
free. I would pay for it,
but I'm broke. I don't
have any good reasons
for why I should get it
for free, I just want it. I
spent all my money on
a gun, and if I don't get
a subscription, I'm
gonna come kill you.
Well, that's not true,
either. I wouldn't kill
you, I'd kill myself.
Also, do you guys
even read these let-
ters? I mean, you
must get a lot of them,
so you can't read
them all. Do you just randomly throw
them away or do you screen them? I
don't even know why the fuck I'm writ-
ing you since you won't read my letter.
Anyway, I'd like to tell you about a little
thing called the Weasel Army. We're just a
bunch of punks who like to skate and cause
ruckus. That's why we can't afford a sub-
scription. We're always spending our
money paying for shit we broke. So, we
thought maybe you'd understand our
dilemma. If you don't get us a subscription,
then we will just have to fulfill our primal
instinct to read Thrasher by stealing it from
the local bookstore each month, and we
don't want to do that.
