LONG HAUL
I recently had the opportunity to
embark on a journey which traversed
the US from coast to coast. I am origi-
nally from an area near Philadelphia,
PA, and decided to move to California
aka "the mecca" of skateboarding.
Along my journey, I encountered terrain
which was both appealing to the eye
and very skate-worthy.
The first place worth mentioning is the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
This place was a conglomerate of mod-
ern architecture, which added to its
streetskating allure. The handrails,
which were skateable, were usually in the
5 to 7-stepper range and easily approach-
able. There were a few huge ones for
those with balls the size of John Holmes.
Overall, an 8 out of 10 rating for the rails.
Complementing the nice array of
handrails were concrete benches and
tables and some other grindable material.
There was even a giant
concrete dildo in the cen-
ter of campus where stunts
could be performed on..
Amazingly, no one asked
me to leave, not even the
pork chop patrol parked
out front. This place was a
skate haven with minimal
bustability, but it was sad.
to see no one but myself
taking advantage of this
concrete arena.

skate scene. Downtown Athens was nice,
but there were minimal sessionable spots.
To enjoy oneself, you had to scope out the
University of Georgia's campus. One
word, humongous! It's pretty fuckin' big.
with 40-50,000 students. The skatespots
are too many to mention, but range from
hips, ledges and stairs, to slanted walls,
rails and really steep hills. My friend failed
to mention until the next day that there
existed a mini-skatepark with quarter-
pipes, wall rides and a streetcourse built
by the locals. This was a bonus to the
killer campus and was enjoyed
thoroughly the very next day,
despite scattered rain.
Altogether, the town gets a 5,
the campus gets a 9, and the
course served its purpose.
Bustivity was still at a mini-
mum. I was amazed during the
entire journey, considering I
came from an area where you
are constantly looking over
your shoulder in case immedi-
ate departure is necessary.
Following the south, I began
to head west and stopped in
Oklahoma City for a night. I
scoped out the city for a bite to
eat and check out the bombing
site. Good food, sad sight. It was raining.
and the city became a ghost town after
business hours. One bar, no houses, it
seemed pretty desolate to the un-skate-
trained eye. The city architecture left
something to be desired for us, so a 6
rating is given. Can't talk, need sleep.

University. All I can say is
bricks, lots of them. The
building and sidewalks had
either bricks around or in it. However,
there were some very skate-worthy spots
if you searched hard enough. I even
found a few virgin handrails ripe for the
sliding, mostly in the 5-step range. A few
ledges and steps with smooth landings
made me salivate instantly as I
launched my rolling plank and I joyously
into the air. Overall, this campus gets a 7
on skatability. Once again, the bustivity
was at a minimum, and the sight of fel-
low skaters looked dreary, although it
was a school day.
My journey then took me to Athens,
Georgia, where I found an almost thriving
The rest of the journey was spent sight-
seeing with a detour from the unexpected
snowstorm in New Mexico (in April?).
That sucked. Next stop, of course, Las
Vegas. Lots of girls, not enough money.
The final leg of my journey brought
me to the skatopia I so desired:
Fremont, California. I am now sur-
