Butter 08's
self-titled release on Grand Royal
was masterminded by Cibo
Matto's Yuka Honda and Miho
Hatori. While on a similar experi-
mental rock vibe as Jon Spencer
Blues Explosion-not surprising.
considering they have Russell
Simins as part of the
equation-their record is much
smoother with a lot of funky disco
grooves. When The Roots
dropped their Jazzy live instru-
ments record, Do You Want
More?!!!??! in '95, it
became my instant
favorite. But their
newest. Illadelph
halflife, goes deeper into
the hardcore with thick-
er, penetrating cuts
that reflect their true
roots in hip hop...

Grant Relf, bassplayer for the
Australian pop-punk band

new skateboard he purchased on
the band's recent US tour. But,

sidered the shit in '91 when they
came out with their instant classic
self-titled debut. But then high
expectations were shattered with
the release of the unimpressive
Black Sunday and III (Temples Of
Boom) records. Thinking I wasn't
going to hear anything worth hav-
ing by them again, the Unreleased

brand new Andy Stone model

behind in a New Paltz. New York
motel. Luckily, Bodyjar's record

down the axe and mail it back to
Melbourne in time for the band's
Australian tour with homeland
heroes, Silverchair. Bodyjar will

Stepping out from underneath the umbrella of the Soul
Assassins, House of Pain is ready to reclaim their hard-
core hip hop audience. I spoke
with rap veteran Everlast about
their new record. Truth Crushed

the spiritual turn his life has
taken recently
The new album sounds a little
grittier than you used to be.
Was that what you were going
for, more of an underground
type
feeling!
We did a couple rock remixes
for songs, so a lot of people
expected us to turn into the
Beastie Boys overnight, and the
bottom line is that me, myself. I'm
ab-boy, Rap music is my life, so
we were just trying to let people
know what we're really all a about.
We sour with a lot of rock bands.
and our shows have a little bit of a
vibe like that, but we're just try
Ing so let people know what kind
of music to expect
What's the title of the record
all about?
It's a quote from a Dr Martin

... I went to the
Pearl Jam show
in Toledo, OH, to
shoot photos of
the opening act.
While standing inside the
venue. Eddie Vedder walked
passed me several times before
pausing in front of where I was
standing. The atmosphere was
totally relaxed and casual. I
asked him if he knew that peo-
ple were scalping tickets out-
side for $400 each and told
him that the whole Pearl Jam
vs Ticketmaster publicity
stunt had obviously backfired
and nobody I knew even had a
chance of getting a ticket.
After mum-
bling some
incoherent
words. he
motioned to his
security guards,
who proceeded
to grab me and
push
me
towards the exit.
Then a 6'4"
Pearl Jam bus
driver started
yelling in my
face, saying I
was going to
have my ass
kicked. I did not
cause any problems and simply
asked a local police officer to doc-
ument the incident. As I was
doing this, the bus driver started
yelling to Eddie, telling him that
the Sony/Epic publicist on the
road with them said I had sued
them once and that I was an
"asshole." Wait. Pearl Jam can
sue Ticketmaster, but I can't sue
Sony/Epic? And, since the band
has a very similar meaning to me. A lot of people think that they
know what we're about, but it's like, nah, we know who we are.

What it means to me is just doing what's

bury it underground, or you can put

you can crush it up and hide it, but I'

that you drop a lot of Islamic refer

Yes. I am, and Truth Crushed To

whole concept of God has been fictional

I'd be like, do what I say, don't do what I do. Some people think
of Islam and automatically think of Farrakhan or Arab people.
That's stereotyping. There are Muslims in every country, and
unlike what most people think. Islam takes all religions into
I hesitate to even bring it up, but where do you stand in
East/West?
It's hard to categorize myself because I was born in New
York, and through the course of my life moved back and forth
from there to LA. If you ask me where I live. I'll say LA. If you
ask me where I'm from, I'll say New York. As far as hip hop. I'm
considerably more influenced by East Coast music. The whole
thing is getting out of hand a
