All I eat is chicken taco salads
from the Taco Bell next door to
the skatepark. Before I came here,
I had never skated. But, dude, I
read your magazine one day in the
Wal-Mart by my house in Pensa-
cola, and was like, "Fuck, man,
this shit's bad!" And I read in the
mag how cement is like the #1
stuff to skateboard on, so I asked
these kids on skateboards that I
saw about an hour later where the
best place in the world to board
was. They told me the name of
the park, and I went home, called
information, got the number
to the park, called it,
get my picture taken and turn pro
probably within six months." I
don't really care about turning
pro, though, I just like the feeling
of rolling around the Nine Bowl
at the park. Anyway, once my par-
ents and my job were taken care
of, I caught a bus to Daytona,
found the park, got a membership
and have been making weekly
withdrawals out of my bank
account to live on. I bought a sick
board too. It's a Wade Speyer with
this totally fine-looking chick on it.
So stoked! Even though I've only

asked if they sold pro
boards, got directions
and went over to
my work to quit.
I'd been working
tables at Florentine's
Italian Restaurant for
the last five years, and
I lived with my mom
and pop before l
moved to the hotel,
so I had money saved
up. My mom sounded
kind of worried when I told her I
was going to move to Daytona to
become a pro skater. She said,
"Larry, you're twenty-four years
old, you've got a good, steady
job, and you're supposed to start
junior college next month, Why in
the world do you want to skate-
board? Is there even such a thing
as professional skateboarders?"
So to calm her down, I said, "Yeah,
mom, there's lots of them, and
don't you remember I used to
rollerskate all the time when I was
little? That'll give me a jump-start,
and I'll get good, move to San
Francisco to where Thrasher is,
been skating for three
weeks, I can already
drop into every-
thing at the park,
and I have lines in
the Nine Bowl.
When the older
dudes come to the
park, it's so awe-
some, they can do
every kind of grind
and handplant
there is. Sick! Some
of the kids at the
park don't like me,
though, because I run into them
all the time. (Sorry, Jimmy, about
that one time). Anyway, I love
shredding, and I'll probably never
stop even when my savings runs
out. I'll probably try to get a job
working at the park. That would
be so great. Hey, do you think
maybe you could have an instruc
tional on how to do kickflips in
bowls someday? I can't even get
near to pulling it off yet. Right on,
man! I love Thrasher
