CRY WOLF
Okay, I'm not going to write one
of those bullshit, whiney letters
saying, "I'm a girl skater and
don't get recognition!" I just want
to say, if you're a girl and you
skateboard, keep it up because
the industry could use a couple of
them. It's really hard getting spon
sored; you have to be in the right
place with the right people at the
right time. Skatin' takes a lot of
patience and timel But girls, don't)
be posers because you will get
your asses kicked! And don't
whine and say, "I fell on my ass!"
The ground will be your best
friend before you get good. I
know I've met the ground many
times before gettin' a trick down
and, for that matter, a ramp. Well,
I just wanted to shout a chick's
voice who skates and is damn.
proud of it, and everyone can lick
me if they don't like it!

ANIMAL FARM
Excellent article on Frank Hirata.
I am a back-to-the-future genera
tion skater and was surprised to
see such an old school issue (July
95), and was very impressed as
this was the first Thrasher I've
bought in two or three years. I
related to what he said about style
versus tricks. Now, it seems that
skaters are almost too cool these
days to even talk to each other on
the street. I really have to step to
them (and your employees) to
have a real conversation. Ever
since (anti-social) Sheffey blew up
out of nowhere (Pulaski/Shut), his
attitude of: "I'm good, you may
suck, I don't know or care" has
dominated skating, and tricks
rule... Who cares about tricks?
From the story I heard. Sheffey
was doing knee-high ollies on his
first day skating, and I knew from
watching him at Freedom Plaza
that he had natural style. Not even
most pros are that gifted, nor am I.
but I do my best to be in da flow
when I (street) skate. I have fun
and sometimes I rip, but I started
skating for fun and will continue
for the same reason. Why do you
guys jock every guy that pulls off a
big handrail 5-0 or some other feat
of sac? Anybody who has been
skating for (fun) a while will say
that sac comes and goes. It's all
about smoothness (flow) or style
before bigness. I see guys that can
land 1 out of 10 tricks that are
sponsored ams. Showing off sucks
and flow rules. Ask Frank (he's an
engineer and so am ).

BAKED BEANS
Props go out to the Boston
skaters and to Thrasher. Thanks for
puttin' a couple of well-known
unknowns in your pages (August
'95, page 26). The barbecue
sounded tasty, I'm sorry I missed it.
It was really nice to see a little
something written up on the skate
scene down there. Boston usually
doesn't get much press in that
area. I can't think of anybody finer
to represent the town of Bean
than Preston Maigetter. Chuck is
