And the winner is...
THE BEASTIE BOYS
WHEN I FIRST HEARD the mes
sage about winning a contest to
interview The Beastie Boys, I
thought my friends were playing
a joke on me. They weren't. After
many days and phone calls, I inter-
viewed Mike D. Wow! I wanted to
interview AdRock. Things happen.
I did my Spanish homework while
talking to Mike D, and thought of
all the good questions after I got
off the phone.
You can learn a lot about people
by seeing how long it actually
takes to get the person you want
to Interview on the phone. The
Interview for me took place five
days later than I was told it would.
I thought the longer I would have
to wait the more really cool ques
tions I could come up with. Nope.
I just forgot most of them or lost
the piece of paper that they were
written down on.
The Beastie Boys will be on tour
this spring/summer, and if they
are coming to a town near you, I
would suggest that you go. They
are a really cool live act. The best.

Are you guys going to have a
Grand Royal tour?
We're going to go on tour start-
ing around April 26. At the begin-
ning, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
and The Roots are playing with us,
and then the second part is Bad
Brains and Hurricane; he's on our
label. And then Luscious Jackson.
What was your favorite album to
make and why?
I don't know, I don't really have
one. We've never had a bad time.
making records. Check Your Head
took the longest, so it was kind of a
struggle because it took so long,
but we didn't really have a bad time.
Where did "bozack" come from?
I don't know what the origin is.
I think that you would have to ask
Professor Biz Markie. He had a lan-
guage department in New Jersey
on B-boy language, he could maybe
help you out. Yeah, I don't know
where it all began, although, I think
we made an official decision to
phase that terminology out. And
we're also phasing out the word
"who." It's just played out.
Did you guys ever get UPS or
FedEx uniforms?
We have. We got UPS uniforms,
and we got to wear them a couple
82 THRASHER
S
times, and then we started getting
all these letters from the UPS
lawyers telling us that we couldn't
wear them anymore.
The UPS guys in Vegas will give
them to us if they have extra ones.
See, but then FedEx kind of have
the more hooked-up uniforms, to be
honest. FedEx have dope, heavier
coats, and then they've got these
sweater vests that are nice, and
they've got the matching shorts or
long pants, your option. So, I would
have to say, based on uniforms
alone, if I were to decide on a job,
UPS or FedEx, I'd go with FedEx.
You might want to consider that.
Just make sure you go in, take your
drug test, get your job at FedEx and
get some gear.
Did any of you guys run away
when you were teens?
No, we really didn't have to
because we grew up in New York,
so we'd be out all the time anyway.
Everything that we'd go out and do
would be the type of stuff you'd
probably run away to do.
How's that ramp doing?
It's okay, but we just got back the
other week, we had to clear out all
the boxes to get the ramp and the
basketball court back functional. I
have to dust that puppy off.
Do you guys skate a lot?
No, right now we're in training at
basketball. We have a big match
coming up, a big game, so we've
got to dedicate ourselves to that.
Who are you going to play?
It's under wraps right now, but it's
a big game. It's probably the most
important part of our upcoming
North American tour.
On your last album, you guys
wrote the songs in the studio?
Yeah, but we always do that.
We're not good at thinking in
advance. We just go in and do it.
