Vertical in Vancouver
Vertical has returned to the thriving skate scene in Vancouver, British
Columbia. Seven months after we lost the Skate Ranch, a couple of
brothers, Jay and Sean Balmer, opened an ideal skate warehouse five
minutes from downtown Vancouver. The spot is called The Clubhouse.
The Clubhouse offers a 32 foot wide, 11 foot high halfpipe, a small street
course, pool tables, pinball, vending machines, lounge area, a welding
shop, a graphic studio, a lowbike shop and a skateboard/snowboard
shop called Newline-all under the same roof. Once a month or so, at
large party usually goes down, either with DJs or local bands. The vert
ramp is 6 inches taller now than it was before, so as to add more vert
Now that the ramp is downtown, a good portion of the street guys are
trying their hand at vert and loving it, along with a large group of snow-
boarders. A regular Monday session is 15-20 guys chain snaking their
hearts out. The Clubhouse also has a lot of speakers scattered all over,
so the music always comes in loud and clear.
