"It's absolutely appalling what the skateboarders have been doing."

from the San Francisco Examiner, 9/8/94
DEALING
WITH DAD
One way or another, everybody has to con-
tend with the man. Some deal with the threat of
incarceration by never doing anything that is
considered illegal, and some deal with it by not
getting caught. Either way, everyone still comes
under the influence of the 5-0.
Outlaw skaters know to never stay in one
place too long when doing the dirty deed.
They even have a few different escape routes
planned in case the cops raid the joint. But
occasionally, even the most careful concrete
criminals will find themselves staring into the
cold, menacing eyes of Johnny Law. This is the
time to remember that resistance is futile and
any attempt to prove your individuality will only
make an example out of you. Relax and give the
officers the information they request and noth-
ing more. Answer their questions with "sir" or
"ma'am," as the case may be. Never rat out a
friend, but do not appear to willfully withhold
information. Convince the heat that you realize
they are just doing their job and the chances are
good you'll get off with a warning. Like anything
else in this world, the easier you go on them,
the easier they'll go on you.

18 THRASHER
VAN JAM
On August 14, 1994, Homer
St in downtown Vancouver, BC,
was closed to make room for a
stage, two quarter-pipes, two
hips and a tabletop. The stage
was set up for local bands such
as Breech, DDT and Gus, as
well as LA's Face To Face. Ken
from Grandma's Skate Shop
donated food for the barbecue,
which was used as a fund-raiser.
for Youth Co and AIDS Van-
couver, organizations helping
people cope
with AIDS.
Overall, it
was another
great skate
day, with a
few people
getting bust-
ed for drink-
ing in public.
And rumor
has it that
some people
still got fined
for skating
downtown.
