THIS IS A DEDICATION
The effects from the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989 were staggering. The lives lost under the rubble of what was
then known as the Cypress section of the old 880 freeway will never be replaced, but the government has decid-
ed to rebuild the highway. Unfortunately for the skaters of the Bay Area, those plans call for the demolition of a
building that houses the longest standing vert ramp in California. Tucked away between the Campbell Village
housing project and the Port of Oakland, the Widowmaker was an institution for over 8 years. It saw all of the dras-
tic changes that skating went through, the ups and downs, the vibes and the cheers, but stood rock solid and
asked only that you try. Like a wild horse out on the desolate plain, it absorbed its surroundings. It was a tough
ramp in a tough town. A whole neighborhood has been destroyed for the needs of the rat race. Families lived
there, and on any Sunday morning you could hear the gospel choirs singing in humble church houses. Children
laughed and played, you knew your neighbor and they knew you. All that is gone now. It looks like Hiroshima
after the atomic bomb. It may be a memory, but the spirit of Widow lives in all those who ever tried to tame it.
