LOVE PARK CONTEST
The snow had just stopped falling, twelve inches, late after-
noon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The local skateboarders got
together for the next couple of days, some buying shovels, all
pitching in to clear out the park. A few days later, on March 12th,
1994, John F Kennedy Plaza, aka Love Park, was the sight of a
contest which drew riders from all over. The 1994 Spring Trade
Show was being held this same weekend at the Philly Convention
Center, so the city was bulging with skateboarders.
Luckily, the weather was nice and it was a good day for a con-
test. The chaos began around ten o'clock. Sub-Zero Skateshop
provided a blue quarter-pipe and a wedge-type hip, as well as
helping judge and organize parts of the event. There were prizes
awarded for all divisions; beginner, intermediate, sponsored, and
even pro. Fred Gall was ripping and got first in the sponsored
division. Mike Vallely got first in the pro division followed close
by Steve Caballero. Others included Rodney Smith and the whole
Zoo York crew, Tom Boyle, Clyde Singleton, Matt Milligan, the
Love locals, a few fine girls, and even Tony Alva. Vinny Ponte was
awarded $100.00 cash for ollieing into the big fountain, and
Jahmal Williams backflipped off the Love sign to make the whole
event complete.
