Ollie Championship in Kuching, East Malaysia
Skateboarding is strong in the land of the head-
hunters. For the past two years, the scene has grown
from five to over one hundred skaters throughout
the state of Sarawak in East Malaysia. Local police
are not very tolerant of skateboarding in the streets
but locals frequent plazas and parking lots.
Rupert Rage, the local shop, helps organize con-
tests to keep the kids pumped. Altogether, there
have been four competitions staged so far: The Pre-
liminary Skate Competition, The Kuching Open and
the Miri Open, but the biggest to date has been the
Sarawak Open Ollie Championship.
Held on November 14, 1993, this competition was
sponsored with cooperation from the Sarawak Eco-
nomic Corporation and soft-drink giant Coca-Cola.
Skaters from as far away as the cities of Miri, Sri
Aman and Santubongto came to join the competi-
tion. The contest started at 9:30am and lasted for
three hours. Faizul Mahdi was judged the senior win-
ner after scaling five decks while Mohd Suffian ollied
four decks to clinch the junior title.
This event not only received a record number of
forty-six participants, but also saw the largest skate
demonstration ever seen in the state of Sarawak,
with all of the skaters belting out their tricks to a
thrilled crowd of about 1,000 skateboard enthusiasts
who came to watch the proceedings.
